I miss mr bread   :Crybaby:

I just finished another fantastic fantasy.  Joe Abercrombie's new book, "A Little Hatred."  It picks up where his original series left off.  If you liked The Blade Itself and that series, then you'll love this book.  I loved it.

I just finished Ed Snowden's book. Quick, troubling non-fiction and I learned a lot about what he did, how he did it, and what he discovered.

Also read the last of the Neapolitan Novels. Lila Cerullo is one of the best literary characters of all time.

I know this is the wrong thread but have you watched Citizenfour? It's a very good documentary.

I should watch it. He mentioned it in the book. Also I'm glad his girlfriend moved to Moscow

Speaking of pandemics, the 1980s AIDS outbreak is the background of one of the best novels I read last year, The Great Believers.

I'm two stories in to The Knife Thrower.  Pretty good if you like slightly weird stuff.

Any of you rough ridin' wonks read anything actually fun and entertaining lately? You know, books that you actually really love reading, and not because you couldn't wait to tell someone you read it so that you could look smart.   :jerk:

SD has given me some solid sci-fi recommends over the past couple years since mr bread left, but the rest of you are essentially worthless to me in this thread.   :dubious:

I liked The Gone-Away World and Angelmaker, both by Nick Harkaway. I think both would be to your alley (if you haven't read them already).

I liked these for pure entertainment:

 The Partner, John Grisham
Hunting for a dude who stole insane amount of money and disappeared (my hero!)  :excited:

 Jericho's Fall, Stephen L. Carter
the spellbinding story of a young woman running for her life from shadowy government forces  :horrorsurprise:

The only snobby book I read lately that I really loved is East of Eden. An all time favorite.

Last book: The Unincorporated Man by Dani and Eytan Kollin. Was a good entertaining read. Will probably finish the next books in that series.
Just started Daemon by Daniel Suarez. Good so far.
Next series will probably be the Black Ocean series by JS Morin

@Pete have you read the Murderbot diaries? They are all technically novellas but are very fast paced, funny sci fi. One of my favorites over the last year.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August was a pretty fun interesting one. A closely related one was The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. The Sympathizer seems like a "seem smart" book but it's kinda funny and lighthearted.

Pete, may have already done these but:

Peter F. Hamilton - Commonwealth books, Void books (kind of same as Commonwealth), and his new Salvation books are all great.
Alastair Reynolds - Revenger books. 1 and 2 are out. 3 is coming. He has other good stuff.
Ted Chiang - Short stories. Has two sets iirc. Both spotty but the good ones are very good.

Okay, back to snobby books. The Overstory tells stories about different people throughout history where trees are featured in one way or another. The first few chapters were engrossing and profound.

The chapter I'm on now is about a dude who participated in some mumped up psychology study and then enlisted and works on a cargo plane in the Vietnam War. I was starting to wonder where in the hell the trees were. Then:

Quote
They manage to jettison all the cargo. One of the pallets explodes on the way out of the plane. crap detonates as it falls through the air. Then Pavlicek, too, is floating down to earth like a winged seed.

MILES BELOW and three centuries earlier, a pollen-coated wasp crawled down the hole at the tip of a certain green fig and laid eggs all over the involute garden of flowers hidden inside.

I've started reading The Hunger ROMs, and I'm firmly gripped.

I've always meant to read them, but I've seen all the movies so I feel like it would be kinda anticlimactic.

LA Confidential - pretty damn good, pretty amazing

Since I saw this title in the movie thread, I remembered that I'd wanted to read it. (I'd previously read The Black Dahlia and thought it was surprisingly good.) It's been a long time since I've seen the movie. And I'm not trying to rate them against each other. But, holy crap, the book is like 100 times more deep and complicated. The writing is pretty strong. Has some artistic merit. Probably a must read if you're into crime novels.
