in other words it does not mean there aren't several "out-of-houses" where you can (with booze!) torture/kill your bro, or "party buses" where you can (with booze!) sing along to racist numbers on your way to a formal.

correct, making the greek houses dry would not eliminate the problem. but it would eliminate ksu from being liable for anything that happened because their policy is no booze.

While the situation at OU needed to be dealt with swiftly, I should say that I should no longer be astounded by the broad brush that some at GE paint with.   It has to be goEMAW'ing, right?   The immediate sewing of individual actions into the fabric of entire communities, groups, institutions, states and even countries is, in a word; astounding, albeit fascinating.
And I'm never amazed at how people take comments out of context to twist them around to make a bad point.

There is a reason why the Tulsa Riots of 1921 aren't taught.  There is a reason why kids who have no personal historical point of reference are singing a song about lynching. These are systematic cultural issues, not one off, drunk kids on a bus issues.

yeah, but I also think that sort of behavior would happen less if it didn't take place where a majority of members lived. It would also happen less without the national and university supported organizations with a legacy of hazing, exclusion, and secrecy.

i would agree that alcohol related hazing happens less in dry houses. to what degree, who knows.

youre not off track. a house gets a large deduction off their insurance if they go dry. some actually ban alcohol, some just lie to the insurance companies.

if ksu made every house go dry and somehow followed through with inspections of some sort, the problem would likely just move to out of houses. not much ksu can do there, but it might decrease alcohol related incidents a bit. they dont really have anything to lose...

unfortunately, ksu doesnt seem to have as big of an issue with hazing and deaths as some other schools. it will likely take a tragedy for change to occur.

First post in this thread, and I haven't read the whole thing so forgive me if this has been stated.

I think what happened at ou sucks, I don't think those kids are/were true racists though. They're the product of an environment that empowers boys to think they are men, and teaches them to act how they perceive men should act. Ie taking advantage of women, abusing alcohol, and acting racist because they're middle to upper class white kids (for the most part)

Personally i don't see the point of frats in the modern college society beyond parties and heavy drinking. There will obviously binge drinking on college campuses regardless of Greek affiliation, but I do think Greeks promote that culture more so than non Greeks. I have no facts to back that up, just how it seems to play out over and over again.

As another GEED, I have always been super confused as to why frat housing was "on campus". In fact I just assumed it really wasn't and that it was just something people said incorrectly. Do frats not actually own the land the house is on?

to my knowledge, they are "on campus" because they are affiliated with the university. most chapters require an affiliation with the university to function.

the houses usually own (or mortgage) the land the house is on, or are renting it from another house.

If that is the case then how can the university make them physically leave the house?

i believe the university severs ties with that specific chapter, informs the national chapter that they have done so and then nationals comes in and kicks them off. the alumni board or whoever still owns the property but they cooperate and force the residents out.

OU owns the house, (or leased it and then rented it to the chapter or something):

well, im certain there are different scenarios. im almost positive that the house i lived in was owned by a group of alumni who bought the property. maybe at oklahoma they own all of the houses, idk.

I was mostly oblivious to fraternities in college.  I paid practically zero attention to them at all.  However, the one guy in my circle that was in one(don't even know which) used to get super worked up if you called it a Frat rather than a Fraternity.  He said that was similar to calling our Country a $!#*.  I mean, what?

Also, I don't understand the idea of signing up for one knowing that you would very likely be tied up, hurt, beat, sleep deprived, or some other form of severely mumped with just to get accepted.  I mean, I am not judging, I just don't get how houses actually got ppl to sign up with the unofficial reputation of this occurring.  Baffling. Especially when you walk around campus and the guys that are in frats are just like anyone else.
