I have a little more information on this! KU is not interested in joining a conference that has partial members, it must be 12, 14, 16 full time members. KU officials have / are going to meet with several Big East presidents. There is some interest in forming another conference featuring a merger of schools that remain in the Big 12, Big East schools, and several Conference USA schools in which there will be a western division and a eastern division. I found this information about the possible line up:

West
KU
KSU
Baylor
Iowa State
Houston
Mizzou
Memphis
South Florida

East
WVU
Cinci
Louisville
UConn
Pitt
East Carolina
Syracuse / Rutgers / Central Florida / Temple

Each division leader would get their own BCS spot. The value of the TV network revenues is still under evaluation as there would be a network in each state where a school is present.

What if the SEC decides to raid the ACC for the likes of FSU, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Clemson/Georgia Tech? I mean if Maryland already jumps ship to the Big 10 like that one report says, whose to say the SEC doesn't go after those schools and it's the ACC left scratching its ass.

Football-wise, there are only 8 teams.  If we're going to 4 16-team superconferences, it's going to be near-impossible for the Big East to survive.   Those teams are going to eventually be split up between the ACC and Big Ten after the SEC poaches a few ACC teams.  And guess where that leaves us?  Right back where we are now.

Our only hope of ever being in the 4 conference, 64 team deal is either the PAC 10 or SEC.  So, in other words, we're screwed eventually no matter what happens.

I'm not quite ready to let go of being a BCS school (by name, at least) and would welcome the time to slowly transition into mid-major-dom joining the Big East would give us.

Well, yes...if we're going to accept a possibility of a 5-conference set-up.  I agree that this is our best overall hope right now.  There are too many conference to the east that will be poaching teams.  But the PAC 10 will be the only conference to the West, and that leaves a big gap right in the middle.  With TCU, Baylor, and Houston in the conference, there might be enough politicians in Texas on our side, and then you add in New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Utah, Nevada, and that's at least a nice group of senators.  Plus, having a service academy in there might help.
