As much as it hurt for OSU and KSU fans to be passed over a 1 loss Alabama the real pain is the precedent it is setting.  If OU or UT ever gets the same treatment we are in trouble.

If it happens to OU or UT, we'll have 12 members by the following season.

So, after all has been said and done, the only three schools from the Big 6 that were left out are Cincy, USF, and UConn.  Every other team from all six conferences is present and accounted for, and Utah and TCU both moved up into the upper tier.

All that really happened was that the Big East and WAC died.

On the whole, if the Big Ten, ACC, and SEC are locked into 14 team leagues for the next ten years, it's going to be pretty interesting to see what happens after all of these GORs start coming due.

Sorry MIR, I think the other 4 power conferences will fight as hard as they can to set a precedence that playing an extra game makes their schedules harder. Those guys quotes will be Exhibit A that the Big12 is scared to play it, therefore it must mean that they must be given extra credit for playing an extra game. They will have those quotes printed and ready to use the first chance they get, especially the ACC.

I get the "we don't want to slip up" stance, I just think it will be used as ammo that we have had multiple people within the conference admit it. It's in the best interest of those others that a CCG be given extra weight. I don't think it's a conspiracy, I think they'll honestly believe the extra game makes their schedule harder and will say and vote that way.

So you think "they" will ignore the actual SOS numbers that will show that in most cases a true round robin is stronger than divisional play in favor of some old quotes that you aren't taking in their proper context? :jeffy:
If the round robin SOS is so great, explain why OSU & KSU didn't play for the championship in '11 & '12.  Both had 1 lose Alabama picked over them, even thou we had the better SOS.

P.S.  Don't act condescending and all rough ridin' intellectually superior.  Please answer why our great SOS doesn't get a one lose team other than TU or OU in the MNC over big schools with one lose.

Probably for the same reason Auburn went undefeated in 2004 was denied an opportunity to play for the title while USC, a team that didn't even play a CCG, went instead.

I think what we're seeing is that power is being taken away, slowly, from some of the major power programs and being moved completely into the hands of the networks.  There are a handful of universities that have enough pull to manipulate the networks, but overall, TV is now completely driving the bus.

I don't know if you could say that 10 years ago.

oh yeah because 10 years ago OU still went to the national championship game despite getting embarrassed by us in the CCG

and us going all the way down to the Alamo Bowl 5 years before that after losing in double overtime.

and why undefeated non-bcs teams don't get to go to the NCG.

it has always been some form of this bud.

I'm not talking about scheduling, scott.  I moved on from that last night.

I'm saying that everything is driven by TV.  From who plays on what day/time to which school plays in what conference.  No conference won realignment; everyone probably came out a loser in some fashion.  But TV won.  They have one less conference to deal with.  The Big East basketball teams now can get paid what they're worth, and the AAC football teams will be paid what they're worth.  A lot of the fat has been cut.  A whole conference died (WAC), so there's another conference that you don't have to pay. You don't have to overpay Idaho to get Boise State.  CBS doesn't have to change their Tier 1 payout for the SEC, but they have another whole matchup to choose from to get a good game.

ESPN has three networks and a web service that they use to broadcast games, and they need inventory.  Fox has an entire distribution network that needs inventory.  Everyone wants college sports and universities are now nothing more than content farms for programming.  We lost our leverage because we all became mercenaries.

Look, I'm all for maximizing revenue because that's the world we live in now, and I am a consumer of the product, so all of the new alliances and matchups are fun for me.  But we're living in a period where TV is going to drive the bus, and they'll continue to do so for the next decade or more.  Until we know how the television industry is going to look in 2025, it's hard to say what college football will look like beyond that.  In some ways, it's refreshing that the ACC clung together, like we clung together, to save what they have.  If the ACC let it slip away, who knows what the world would have looked like in ten years.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that TV is driving everything now, and we're just along for the ride.

still kinda lost where TV and media and money didn't run stuff 10-15 years ago.

The primary driver was always ticket sales.  Media dollars weren't nearly as much as you'd get with folks coming through the gate, especially at schools with gigantic stadiums.  It was important for schools to be geographically linked because you wanted butts in the seats.

We reached a tipping point in the last ten years where the vast majority of schools now take in less at the gate than they do from media contracts.  Schools don't need to be geographically linked because WVU makes us more money by being a TV partner than they would by having their fans drive to our stadium (which they obviously won't most likely do).

We took in more at the gate with our 50k stadium back in the early-to-mid 00's by having 8 home games a year (appx. $1 mill per game) than we did in conference money (about $6 mill a year).  Missouri wasn't a threat to leave because they could make more money by having our us, KU fans, NU fans, ISU fans, etc. drive to fill their crappy stadium than they would by making $1 million more a year being in the SEC.  And all of those monetary gains would have been offset by travel costs, so movement was impeded.

But that's not the way it works now.  The money has become so asinine that not moving to a different conference can put you at a tremendous disadvantage.  Florida State, in the next decade, will most likely make over $100 million less than Florida by being in the ACC vs. the SEC.  That buys a lot of coaching salaries and major capital improvements.  The costs of not moving vs. moving are amplified now by opportunity cost.

The ACC stuck together so they could make decisively less money than everyone else because, well, they wanted to stay together.  Maybe they're like the dude sitting in front of the tank at Tiananmen Square, I don't know.  But they stopped Armageddon yesterday, and they gave the landscape ten more years to settle.  By then, who knows how much more or less power TV will have?  But as of today, it almost drove college athletics to the brink, and we dodged a bullet.

There's no buyout or exit penalty in the SEC.

As a sidenote, two sources have told The World-Herald that the Big Ten has done prior "homework" on Oklahoma, Kansas and Vanderbilt among other schools who might some day be expansion targets. The Big 12 grant-of-rights deal didn’t stop a look-see for OU and KU.

Yeah, if they could pull OU or KU with Mizzou and those schools are willing to go to court it would be the best case scenario for the big 10

Meh. The big bad schools were always going to have more money and the big names were always going to get more votes and get the benefit of the doubt in bowl games and championships. Nothing has changed.

Delany needs to be careful.  The SEC, ACC, and Big 12 are all allied or planning an alliance in some for, and as the conspiracy goes, the three have blocked together to shut him down.
