I'm guessing that 60k stadium is primarily for visiting fans who are enjoying the excuse to go to Vegas

Speculation:

UNLV's monster stadium plan is a move by that school to get themselves into the PAC 12.

Does becoming a PAC 12 school overnight make them relevant and able to fill a 60,000 seat stadium?

You would think a school of Las Vegas would have a ton of recruiting advantages.

This will be Vegas', crown jewel mulit-sport/event venue; not primarily UNLV's football stadium.  With a $800mil pricetag, it's got to draw action year round through bowl games, all-star games, basketball games, field sport events (soccer, rugby, track/field), concerts, etc.  Even if UNLV draws 50,000 opposing fans over the course of a season, the revenue from these visitors will be nominal.

Looks like Tulsa may be up next to ditch CUSA 1.0 and join CUSA 2.0.

They should have a ton of recruiting advantages, but they're the kind of recruiting advantages that attract the Nevin Shapiros of the world.  Coke, strippers, booze and abortions galore.  UNLV could parlay that into a great 4-5 year run but sooner or later the NCAA would come calling.

Big 12 commissioner: League could be 'proactive' on expansion front

GRAPEVINE — Although stressing that bigger does not always mean better, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Wednesday that league officials “could be proactive” on the expansion front and will address the topic in league meetings later this month.

Big 12 athletic directors will meet Jan. 28-29 at a regularly scheduled meeting. Bowlsby said one topic will be discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of conference realignment in an era when the Big Ten, Southeastern Conference, Pac-12 and ACC will each have 12 or 14 members when the latest round of realignment becomes official with the moves of Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten for the 2014-15 calendar year. Big 12 presidents could discuss the topic at a later date, Bowlsby said.

The Big 12 has only 10 members. That is not enough, under NCAA rules, to have a conference championship game in football. But the configuration does maximize per-school revenues from television rights fees, a financial advantage Bowlsby said league officials will weigh during discussions about the future of the Big 12.

“We continue to watch the landscape,” Bowlsby said during the first day of meetings at the NCAA Convention at the Gaylord Texan Resort. “Until we’re persuaded that larger is better, we feel pretty good about right where we are. Part of what we’re going to do during the meetings … is talk about what the advantages are of getting bigger and what the disadvantages are. “If you get bigger, do you have to get to 16? Do you get all the benefits at 14? Do you get them at 12? I just think there’s a real shortage of empirical evidence that can guide our decisions.”

Hence, the desire for exploratory talks at a time when the Big East is losing members, rival leagues are expanding and college football is preparing for the start of its playoff era following the 2014 regular season. Expansion targets clearly exist if the Big 12 seeks to grow to recapture a conference championship game as part of the playoff era.

Speculation has centered on Big 12 interest from Florida State and Clemson from the ACC, with Connecticut and Cincinnati among the most desirable remaining assets in the crumbling Big East.

In terms of expansion, Bowlsby said: “We could be proactive. I think there are some ways we could.”

Bowlsby even cited the possibility of adding a Big 12 championship game under the league’s configuration if NCAA rules, which allow such games only in conferences with 12 or more members, are tweaked. The topic surfaced during a meeting of commissioners after last week’s BCS National Championship Game in Miami and Bowlsby said the idea “is worthy of consideration,” particularly at a time when the NCAA seeks to streamline its rule book and will vote on measures to do so at this convention.

“In a period of deregulation, does it make sense that the association is describing the manner in which we create our champion?” Bowlsby said. “Does it make any difference if we have 10 members and we take our two highest-ranked teams at the end of the year and have them play off one more time in a repeat and the champion goes on to the post-season? It’s just another area of deregulation that we think is worthy of consideration.”

Bowlsby said league officials “haven’t talked much” about the possibility of initiating a championship game under its existing 10-team configuration but expect to address that issue later this month. He also cited the Big Ten’s recent additions of Maryland and Rutgers as examples worth monitoring as league officials consider expansion.

“Look at Maryland and Rutgers. They don’t bring programs that are of the ilk of the others in the Big Ten,” said Bowlsby, a former Iowa athletic director. “But the philosophy clearly is, ‘As members of the Big Ten, we can grow them.’ So, you can apply the same thinking to any possible addition.”

Asked what the league needed in terms on a mandate for expansion, Bowlsby said: “A clear mandate only comes from a clear set of data that says this is the right thing to do. I’m not sure that intuition is the best reason to leave (a conference).”

I hope Bob knows that the Big 10 didn't take those programs with any intention of "growing them".

You're giving Las Vegas way too much credit.  That stadium is for monster truck events, and super-cross.  That better captures the "sport" preferences of Las Vegas.

Approximately 60% of the Oklahoman's I know that go to Vegas go for super-cross.  When I said I went to the Fiesta Bowl via Vegas, I had 4 people respond they were going in May for super-cross.  And not a group of 4; 4 people who did not know eachother who were going with 4 different groups.

Big 10 and SEC Race to Add ACC Schools

18 Jan, 2013

Multiple sources within the Big 10 contend the University of Virginia is set to receive an invitation to join the conference early next week. UVA is expected to ratify the move from the ACC to the Big 10 shortly after receiving the invitation.

UVA would become the 15th member of the Big 10.

None of the Big 10 sources would divulge the identity of the Big 10’s target for #16 but they did confirm that Georgia Tech and UNC are the leading candidates.

Media contacts working close to Georgia Tech believe the Yellow Jackets are the Big 10’s choice for #16 while several sources within the Big 10 believe the conference would prefer UNC over GT.

Sources close to the SEC allege UNC is also engaged in serious discussions to join the SEC along with Duke.

The same sources indicate that the SEC is prepared to be the catalyst of the next round of conference realignment and move quickly to secure either UNC and Duke or Virginia Tech and NC State.

Sources at WVU  say the Big 12 is set to discuss expansion at the end of the month and it is likely they will  invite as many as 6 ACC teams after the Big 10 and SEC move.

So what does this mean?

If the Big 10 and SEC sources are correct we can assume UNC is highly prized commodity – at least a big enough prize to force the SEC to break their pattern of benign poaching and make a preemptive move on UNC before the Big 10 has a chance to snatch up the Tar Heels.

As for the Big 10 my sources tell me on paper UNC looks like a perfect fit but Georgia Tech has enormous support from both Illinois and Purdue. So much support that Delany has been forced to rethink his choice of UNC.

The Big 12 has previously agreed to add FSU and either Miami or Clemson (it’s different depending on who you talk to at WVU or in the Big 12).  My sources at WVU explain that Miami is the more valuable choice due to its larger television market and fertile recruiting grounds but they are quick to explain Clemson is a close second.

What’s clear is that the Big 12 will have the opportunity to add 6 quality schools that will drastically improve their footprint and increase their available television inventory.

If the Big 12 is lucky and the Big 10 and SEC hit 16 and hold the conference could see FSU, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech and NC State as members.

The folks at WVU are giddy at the prospect of being in the same division as old friends FSU, Clemson, Miami and our best “frenemy”  Virginia Tech.

The worst scenario for the Big 12 is still an improvement.  At the very least Bowlsby will decide to add FSU, Miami and Clemson and he’ll have some options to round out the conference at either 14 or 16 with Louisville, Cincinnati, Pitt, BYU or even UCONN.

Why would ACC schools move before the UMD lawsuit with the ACC is settled?  A mass defection of 10 schools would kill the ACC  as a viable conference and their may be no one left to pay the exit fee to after realignment is finished.

The other popular opinion is that it won’t matter. They know UMD will pay far less than the $52 million and they’re willing to move on to greener pastures confident that the ACC’s share of playoff money and eventually even the ACC’s TV money will be redistributed to the remaining big 4 and more than make up for whatever exit fee they may be forced to pay.

Keep in mind I don’t have direct knowledge of the discussion. I rely on friends at WVU and contacts within the ACC, Big 10 and SEC for this information and it can change quickly.
RIP Fatty

I don't think Tier 3 plays into those stats.  Also, ACC added Pitt and Cuse (lost Maryland but gained Lousiville) so they have to divide by a couple more teams.
