I'm good with Notre Dame as a partial member until the NBC contract expires in 2017 with a binding agreement that they join in full at that point in time.

Totally cool with that.  Just not this bullshit I keep hearing from Texas about allowing them to join the Big XII and keep football independent (so they can test out the model for themselves).

Ahhh...I suck.  I forgot about the NBC-ND contract till 2017.  :bang:
Okay, I'm good with ND partial until 2017, then 100% Big 12 after that.

Miami/FSU is not the top rated game in espn's history.  The only reason they are ranked, along with like 8 of the other top 10, is because they were played on labor day or opening Thursday (opening weekend, only game on that night).  If people gave a crap about Miami, they would be one of ABC's highest rated.  ESPN gets their leftovers.

Not to mention, Boise St played in the highest rated game now.  Should we extend an invite to them too?  Or whatever teams are in those games this year?

I pulled that info off of Wikipedia, so it could be outdated or wrong, but it said that Miami/FSU holds the #1, #2, and #5 spots among ESPN's highest rated regular season games.

Its still less based on the teams playing and more based on the day they are playing.  Its basically compairing MNF #s to a regular sunday afternoon NFL game

If "plus one" model is selected, ND will join the Big12 as a full member, we go to 4 16-team super conferences & college fball goes bananas.

No we won't.  Not unless those schools want Congress taking away tax exempt status.

Congress can't agree on anything.  Taking tax exempt status from something as big and as powerful as those 64 teams will never, ever happen.  The Boise States of the world don't have the pull.

I will simply disagree, vehemently, that the 4x16 model is where we're going for a number of reasons.  I think some conferences can make it work, but four can't.  There simply aren't 64 teams out there that provide value.  There's more like 58-60.  No one is going to absorb 4-6 garbage schools just for the sake of having a nice, symmetrical number.

If anything, conferences are going to find ways to shed members and go to a 4x12 model where they can hoard all of the money (if that's what we're considering to be inevitable).

If we go to 4x16, what will happen is that at least two or three of the conferences would follow the WAC model where once the current GoR agreements are up, they would shed members by starting their own conference like the MWC did.  Then those conferences would ally together and lock out those schools left behind (for all intents and purposes).

64 would become 48.  Or 40.  Or 32.

That's always been the fear of going down this path.  64 isn't the number it would end with.  It would be much, much lower than that.

I didn't say that couldn't happen.  At some point KSU will get mumped but I am assuming I will be too old to care by that time.

I guess I'm just saying that I don't think it will.  There will be something that prevents it from hitting that tipping point.

Before it gets to getting screwed mode, this thing will be so litigated out it will be unrecognizeable, the NCAA won't exist and the IRS will have pulled non-profit status on most if not all major conference school athletic departments.

#teamDlewandKK as long as 10 is stable. I'd like 12 though because it gives more wiggle room when some team decides to leave. IDGAF whether we make 18 or 23M from the tv contract. We proved last year we won't spend the extra

Why does anyone think that non-profit status would be pulled? That speculation is so far in the future it's a complete guess. But I'm with SD on this one.

just going to 16 won't do anything.  it's going to 16 and making it impossible for anyone outside of the 4-16 to play in the plus one that would cause people to raise crap.  as long as it's made clear that anyone outside of the 4 could still play for the NC I don't think there's much to worry about.

If nothing was done about non-profit status for the BCS, then it won't happen for the playoff. That Gov from Utah didn't get very far with his crying and litigation he tried to bring forth.

Once in danger, league is back on track with veteran leader as steward
Rick Gosselin [email protected]
Published: 25 May 2012 11:33 PM

IRVING — There are still seven months left in 2012, but let me cast an early vote for my sports executive of the year — Chuck Neinas of the Big 12.
I’m going to cast my ballot now because in a month Neinas will be gone, turning the keys of the Big 12 over to Bob Bowlsby before heading back to his life in the Rocky Mountains. But what Neinas has accomplished should not be forgotten.
The Big 12 reached out to Neinas last September with the conference in tatters. Nebraska and Colorado were gone, Missouri and Texas A&M were headed out the door and Oklahoma and Texas were exploring exit options. Nonetheless, Neinas accepted the offer to become the interim commissioner of a conference on the verge of collapse.
But if you know Neinas, you knew not to take the term “interim” seriously. Neinas is no caretaker — not the man who shaped the Big Eight into football’s most powerful conference in the 1970s. Neinas is a man of action, which is why the Big 12 quietly changed his title from “interim” to “acting” commissioner a few months into his stewardship.
How’s this for action — that shrinking eight-team league grew to 10 under Neinas with the additions of TCU and West Virginia, and the Big 12 reclaimed its status as a superconference this month with a landmark agreement with the SEC to play a bowl game pitting their two champions.
“That announcement has had more legs than a caterpillar,” Neinas said. “[SEC commissioner] Mike Slive and I didn’t realize the impact it would have — far beyond us getting together with a bowl. It’s just reverberated around the country. It certainly confirmed the value and the attractiveness of the Big 12 Conference.”
Not too long ago everyone seemed to want out of the Big 12. Now there’s a clamor to get in. Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech have all been rumored to have an interest. The Big 12 could get back to 12 teams tomorrow and to 14 with a snap of its once-again powerful fingers.
But Neinas sees no reason to rush into anything. There are lessons to be learned from the near collapse of the conference. The initial merger of the Big Eight and Southwest Conference created too many factions, too many rifts that were allowed to fester. The old Big 12 could never get all of its schools pulling in the same direction. There were too many different agendas.
Neinas would like to see all 10 of the schools in the newly reconfigured Big 12 prove they can get along before any more kids are invited into the sandbox.
“People have to understand that bigger is not necessarily better,” Neinas said. “What we are trying to do, in view of what has transpired in the past, is to build unity. We have two new members. Let the membership be comfortable with each other before they ever consider going forward.
“We’ve taken care of the contentious issues. We have a very workable solution. Let’s build on that, then down the road maybe think of expansion. But to automatically run off and say, they’re going to go to 12 or 14 or whatever — that does not take into account where this conference was, where we’ve come from and where we need to go.”
Ten is a nice, round number. Neinas sees that as an ideal number for a conference because all the schools can play each other in every sport. Of the five leading football-playing conferences — ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC — only the Big 12 has that scheduling flexibility.
There will be 14 schools in the SEC in 2012 and 12 apiece in the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12. Ohio State will not play Iowa in football this season, nor will Florida play Alabama or Southern Cal play Oregon State. Traditions have given way to divisions.
“I’ve talked to some of my colleagues in the ACC and SEC who tell me 14 is unwieldy,” Neinas said. “You talk about disrupting tradition — North Carolina and North Carolina State will now play basketball once a year. What happened to Tobacco Road?
“The situation has become cumbersome. If you’re at 14 you may as well go to 16 because then you can have two eight-team divisions. But then that’s not a conference. That becomes a scheduling convenience, not a conference.”
Except for West Virginia, fans of the other nine schools in the Big 12 can still tailgate to games. It makes sense for the Big 12 to extend its electronic footprint East to give West Virginia a travel partner — but don’t expect any expansion to happen under Neinas’ watch.
“Why don’t people believe us when we say we’re content at 10?” Neinas said. “There is comfort with 10. The membership is much more comfortable having a conference without divisions. They’ve experienced divisions. Just three weeks ago our athletic directors discussed it thoroughly and everyone said we’re just comfortable with 10.”
For what Neinas has accomplished in his nine months on the job, give him a 10. A perfect 10.
Big 12 spring meetings
When: Wednesday through Friday
Where: Kansas City, Mo.
Who: Big 12 athletic directors, faculty representatives and senior women’s administrators will be joined Thursday and Friday by the Big 12 board of directors.
Outlook: Unlike two years ago, where the conference seemed on the verge of disintegration, the Big 12 is operating from a position of strength. Contributing factors include pending 13-year TV agreements with Fox and ESPN and a landmark partnership with the SEC for a New Year’s Day bowl.
What to watch: The Big 12 will weigh in on the new BCS. A plan by Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds to play semifinals and finals outside the BCS at neutral sites is generating a lot of buzz. The plan would include selecting the top four teams regardless of conference affiliation. Expansion is an unavoidable topic. Florida State and Clemson have said they are willing to listen. Even Notre Dame, in all sports except football, could be in play depending on what happens in the Big East. But Big 12 athletic directors reaffirmed three weeks ago they are comfortable at 10 and nothing will happen until the new BCS parameters are known.

For clarification, I really hope the Big 12 adds FSU and Clemson to get to 12.  That would be fun.  Earlier, I meant that I wouldn't blame FSU or Clemson fans for not wanting to come to the Big 12.  They have quite a history in the ACC.

Do not want GT or Miami.  I don't want to add garbage fan bases.  For whatever reason, I just don't believe ND is coming to the Big 12, so i'm not even considering them.

First this is the first "Behind The Wall" info Cemetery Hill has for the new Clemson 247Sports. This is for all the 247 members or whoever has decided to come visit the new Clemson 247Sports. In the next 7-14 days these nuggets will be for our VIP subscribers. We hope you value these and will join us.

This is info I've accumulated from my contacts about this situation.

-Think, about all the things you read etc. Who did they come from? Do they cover the story? How long have the covered the story? Got me? Don't concern yourself with GT or Miami. No one at either school at any level is covering this or has any good information. In fact Miami went out of their way to deny Big 12 activity in an interview.

-No one and I mean no one covers this story in their out loud voice for GT, Miami and ND. Why? Nothing to it.

-GT early on told the Big 12 we're not interested, thank you. Now there is info they have had contact. That's literally all I can confirm. I speak with Baylor 247's Brian Ethridge frequently about any and everything re: the Big 12 expansion. Just remember GT has nothing to do in any scenario with Clemson, FSU or teams 11 & 12. Everything we've been told points to that and that GT doesn't carry that cache.

-Notre Dame: their role in this is controlled by the decision the BCS makes for the new 4 team playoff. Understand these things-

-Notre Dame is under contract with NBC until 2015

-They want to stay independent. Their choice in this whole deal comes down to whether the new BCS is based off rankings or in fact is the conference champion model is used. Everything we hear points to the conference champion model and must be ranked in the top 6. If this happens ND goes in to the Big 12 and the fun begins with taking GT or Pitt most likely as 14.

-Miami?? Ridiculous garbage to even think they would leave. Again no one from Miami covering this because it won't happen and there is no story. They told the Big 12 that it didn't fit their model and Texas was happy as they don't play nice.

Regarding Miami, according to my contacts it's thought they will lose more scholarships than USC did as penalty from the NCAA. The information I received is the NCAA has even more damning evidence such as video and pictures of the wrong doings and they intend to make an example out of Miami. They will be crippled after the penalties are announced and thus useless. The average attendance for a given Miami game is what? 10,000?

Clemson, the BOT and TDP

-The Big 12 meetings are 5/30-6/1 We've heard to expect "rubber stamping" talks to give Clemson and FSU with the formal ok to invite. Fwiw my contacts have told me the comments last week by Wilkins and TDP made were viewed as "landscape and succession" comments.

-Publicly it appears FSU is out in front of this but my contacts tell me Clemson has been very coy and strategic in this whole process and has their ducks in a row.

-Shortly after the Big 12 meetings I'm told to expect another BOT meeting. Various contacts point to the focus being to appoint someone to negotiate for Clemson.

-The Big 12 can't offer until Clemson and FSU declare they are looking and leave the ACC formally.

-The new Big 12 commissioner Bowlsby will be announced formally 6/15.

-Due to the fluid nature of this situation I am told the timing is unclear yet but that my contacts believe by June's end there could be a resolution is in place for all this.

- TDP retires in a year. One could view this as his "white whale" or a "legacy" move. He would be forever remembered if he pulls this off right?

-Lastly the notion that "the talks have just begun" "this isn't as far along as you might think" "this group or that group legitimately doesn't know anything about this" is all posturing. It's true that many don't know about this but that doesn't mean this hasn't been going on behind the scenes for awhile.

-This more than ever is the time to lie, cover tracks, stonewall the media because this is the biggest sports story at Clemson since 1981. You don't just wake up a month from the BCS meetings and start talking about this. Leaks happen a lot of times in these situations from lesser media to stimulate strong denials that keep the masses unsteady and unsure about what really is happening.

Also remember no one wants to be denied in public. This way if something ever does fall apart denial is there for both.
