Logistically speaking, 16 makes sense for our particular arrangement, but you have to make the money work.

With 14 teams, I almost think you need to do a nine game conference schedule.

1 cross rival
2 rotate

This is a start if you go to 14.  There is a way I like more, using this as the base, because not all schools have a natural cross rival and I don't want to force it.  If you are school that doesn't have a natural "cross rival", then you don't have a permanent "cross rival".  However, you use it as a place holder.  In the "rotate" you don't do home-and-home every 2 years like we used to, but rather continually changing cycle.  For the "cross rival" slot you do a home-and-home over 2 years, then change the cross rival designate bi-annually.  This way you see more of the teams in the other divisions and create continually rotating pockets where you will see the same team 3-out-of-4 years where you get short term familiarity/rivalry on a rotating basis.

As long as the talk is focused on those teams coming to the Big 12, this can only be a good thing. The Big 12 teams defecting to the Big 10 and SEC started as just ridiculous talk, but as soon as nervous ADs and Presidents started to believe the rumors, we all saw firsthand what came of them. Worst case, we end up with our perfect 10 team conference. Best case, we add 2 teams from the ACC and make a ton of money. Actually, the worst case would be adding 4 teams and having a crappy 14 team schedule.

Conference Split for 12 team conference, cross division rival is across, plug FSU and clemson/miami into 11-12.

This keeps OU and TX in the same division preventing a rematch in the Dr. pepper thus making it easier to get in NC game,

divisions have as equal level of compeition as you can without splitting ou/tx

allows nortards at least 1 game a year in TX for recruiting.
