The Big 12 is about to get a lifeline from ESPN.
The conference stands on the verge of an extension for its Tier 1 broadcast rights (i.e. top games) that would extend the current deal with ESPN through 2025 and be worth about $1.3 billion to the conference. That translates into an increase of about $5 million per year per school.
Sports Business Daily first reported the story Tuesday. Sources briefed on the deal confirmed the information.
The Fox deal, announced last April, is worth $1.17 billion and also will run through 2025.
Combined, the two deals should preserve the Big 12 for the life of the contract. Members had agreed to grant their TV rights to the conference for six years in a show of stability earlier this year. Now, sources said, the member schools are likely to extend those rights for the life of the contract -- effectively preventing any more defections.
The Big 12 has seen four founding members leave in the past two years.
"This is a big deal," one source said.
