The MU fans I'm around are fairly split on this.  Sort of an over 40/under 40 deal.  The olds respect the tradition of the Big8/12, the local rivalries, the tournament, realize this is where they belong, know they've never won consistently in football other than a short stint in the Big XII under Pinkle.  The young ones are mostly dumb fucks and want to go to the SEC.

Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson has been hired as Kansas State's 34th football coach, multiple sources have confirmed to GoPowercat.com.  Patterson replaces Ron Prince, who was fired Wednesday. - Tim Fitzgerald   Nov, 7, 2008

the sec absolutely wants MU.  It gets them into markets they aren't in and cripples the big 12 even more.  now, UT and OU have choices to make, but not good ones.  MU could really screw everything up.  I'm not sure how you talk meth heads down from the ledge.

We get into the same mess as we did with A&M before though, where Baylor (and other schools) may end up suing.

And, this time, there's a lot of smoke (possible proof) that the SEC was the cause of our breakup, therefore, they negated contracts, etc.

Mizzou seems more like a legal target than A&M was.  A&M was on the SEC radar for a while, so you can make a case that they withdrew from the Big 12 due to issues and then went to the SEC after.  Mizzou can't make that claim.  DeArmond really, "It's Patterson!ed" them.

IMO, the threat of legal action is more bark than bite.  MU fans are basically sounding the same as A&M fans.  And it’s tough to stop that ball once it starts rolling.  Especially when MU’s fan base is making active campaigns/pitches to elected officials…whose survival/re-election is determined by those same fans.  There’s a ton of pressure on them to go.

If I was an MU fan, I'd be pissed if we stayed in the Big XII.

Well, what do the money fans want?  They are the ones that matter.

Actual alumni that I've talked to aren't cool with this.  Just t-shirt fans.

Even if it meant destroying a football program you just spent a decade and millions of dollars building?

Hyperbole. Staying in a dying conference would do more damage.

Signing over your TV rights means the conference won't die.

I absolutely believe the SEC will be around longer than the Big XII at the highest level of competition. To say it won't die is naive.

To say it will die is as equally naive.

This is the only BCS conference centered in the time zone.  If we pick up another Texas school and maybe a couple that bleed into the East Coast (Cincy, WVU, Louisville, etc.), we'll be fine.

I mean, will it always be what it once was?  No.  But there's a chance, with the right mix, that it will be a lot more harmonious.  And with the money we may get, it could be a lot more competitive.

Let Missouri leave . . . Louisville would be a great replacement, they have a $77 million dollar athletic budget.

Then somehow get BYU.

I kind of feel the same way. And, as someone alluded to earlier, I almost want them to. I mean, I want them in the league, but if they leave, I'll finally feel like the teams that aren't "all in" are gone. As long as everyone that's here wants to be here, and I think everyone except maybe MU falls into that category, we'll be fine.

Yeah, let’s not all start saying losing MU isn’t a big deal.  Replacing MU with UL is a step down.  Replacing BYU for CU is a push?  WVU is probably =, maybe less than A&M?.

As it relates to tv rights, does anyone know the duration of granted rights for the other conferences?  It appears to me that 6 years is kind of absurd to agree to if we’re talking about stability.  It should be for the duration of the fox deal and then when the tier 1 is signed, it should be amended for the duration of that contract and rolled each time the tier one is negotiated.  THAT is stability and I would imagine that is what other conferences do.  I highly doubt texas wants that .  What’s good for the conference is good for the members however that’s not consistent with Texas’ mindset.

I wouldn't say that CU and BYU are a push unless they maintain indy in fb and join the conf in all other sports.  Then I would say that it isn't a push, but worse than CU.

All this said, I bet Missouri stays because Mike Slive won't pull the trigger on a full invite.  The longer this sits and the nation believes the Big 12 is saved, and Mizzou and the SEC can be the villain, he won't do it.

I don't care how desperate he is for #14.  Too much leaked out and was reported by bad journalists here in KC.

I don’t think it’s a conditional offer.  As I stated earlier, I think the legal threats are just that.  Threats.  The SEC probably got some comfort around that and that’s why they let A&M in.  Certainly the other side of that is that they got some indication from Kenneth that he might not sue, however I’d assume that would have leaked out by now…it hasn’t.

Here's the thing.  We've proven that the Big 12 will survive (and maintain contracts) without A&M.  Can we make the same claim with Missouri?

At the very least, if Fox comes back and says we broke the contract and they will pay us $200 million less in rights fees for Tier 2, who do we sue?  Missouri?  The SEC?

We keep the Texas market with the three that remain (plus picking up one more...maybe).  We lose six million TV's with Mizzou.  Gone.  In an instant.

Someone will sue someone.

I dunno how these things work, but my assumption would be that the big 12 would have to, in good faith, try to make the contract “whole” again.  Which would mean adding teams.  Then the suit would only be for what was “lost”, which I wouldn’t amount to much if they added UL and TCU.  Again, I think these are threats because there is uncertainty in lawsuits, however it won’t preclude a team from leaving.  No one’s going to file an injunction stopping a team from leaving.

What the SEC realized is that OU/UT are boxed into a corner and need the big 12 to survive (especially since UT is dead set on keeping the LHN and OU can’t go to the Pac-12 w/out UT and can’t get into the SEC with OSU in tow).  The SEC has the Big 12 by the bevo’s, and they know it.

I'm wondering how the SEC benefits from wrecking the Big XII?  I can understand the desire for Missouri, but not at the expense of our entire league.  SEC needs to tread very carefully here.  I think they know this.  They're also trying to keep the Big East intact by refusing WVU.

Yes, but options for number 14 are limited. They have to raid someone.
