So, are we in a better position than WVU at this point?

Absolutely.

So, are we in a better position than WVU at this point?

If the note about the three local schools being valuable as a group, maybe.

If the note is not accurate, then def not.

It is accurate. Every KU fan I know still watches K-State, even though they hate us, just like every K-State fan I know watches KU basketball. I'm sure KU and MU are the same way. I think the 3 schools are much more desirable together than they are separated.

This is true,  I enjoy watching KU and MU lose, and often tune in to see it.

+1.  I have enjoyed focusing my hate on KU and MU over the years, and it makes me feel good knowing they hate KSU.  It would be sad if I had to take that hate away and try to refocus it on some new losery school.

Even if we go SEC, which would be the most badass possible thing probably (and which we won't), I'll still feel for I-STATE0.

If we all go to 16, I feel pretty comfortable in the thought that I-Stateo goes to the Big Ten.

I think that if Texas goes PAC and ND goes ACC, there's no way the Big 10 expands past 12. They would be set up to make far more per team than any other conference. I do think that a playoff with 4 16 team conferences would mean more money for those 64 teams than just about anything else. However, what has been lost in all of this discussion is that the goal of an athletic department is to win games. Athletic departments pursue money because it helps them win games. I think the Big 10 is smart enough to see the benefit in making less money in the current system while still making more than everyone else, rather than making more in a playoff system, but probably making less than the PAC and SEC.

If we go to the SEC, Paul Finebaum will have to take calls from Kansas and possibly talk about basketball occasionally.

According to K-State's press pack, K-State has more alumni in KC than MU does.

Also, according to my own unnamed media source, K-State's TSL numbers (Time Spent Listening) are better than both ku and mu in Kansas City.

There was a thread a while back where KCSF got owned on KSF.com. I don't remember the poster, but he/she claimed to work in the industry and claimed the same thing about TSL. This is why I'd love to get some Nielson ratings or something tangible to compare how valuable each school is to the Kansas market and the KC market. KU fans love to claim that they dominate each, but I'd like to see some numbers to back that up. I think they are a lot closer than what popular opinion says.

It's been 3 years since the last time I had access to detailed numbers for the KC market and KU doesn't own crap. Yes, they're a big draw for casual fans during basketball but for football games Kansas City would rather be watching reruns of Friends (this is actually true, a rerun of Friends out drew a KU football game, in Kansas City).

That and coupled with the fact that KU doesn't come anywhere close to posting big enough numbers for anyone in the TV world to care about. They may get to a 12 or 15 share for a really big non-rival basketball game in KC and be at a 5 share in Topeka. For football it might be an 8 at best in KC and 2 or 3 in Topeka (Topeka's numbers go up slightly when K-State isn't playing or is away and playing at a different time).

Numbers for MU and K-State are slightly lower in KC. KSU is obviously bigger in Topeka as is MU in Columbia. But all those share ratings would erode 1 to 3 points without interest from the other schools.

You can't keep thinking about the "current system".

The end result of this does not have to be a playoff.  That's a media thing.  The bowl structure can still thrive in this environment.

Last year, one of the things being kicked around with the Pac-16 was two automatic BCS bids for the conference.  If you get a new BCS rule in place where a conference gets two automatic BCS bids if they have sixteen teams, you'll see a move to sixteen much, much more quickly.  That still allows two-at large BCS bids every year for Notre Dame and some non-AQ team that potentially will qualify.  Or you can save one for ND and allow some MWC/C-USA merger have the other spot.

This can fit inside the bowl system.  That's not a problem.

Here's the thing that people are missing out on when discussing the "War for 64"...

Say ND decides to join a conference and picks the ACC.  UConn follows.  ACC has 16.

Pac-12 takes the four we expect them to take.  Pac-16 is created.

ACC and Pac-16 successfully lobby for two automatic BCS invites per conference.

SEC invites KU/MU/KSU as 14-16.

Here is what the Big Ten has left to pick.

If you are competing with the same three or four entities for TV dollars, wouldn't you want to do whatever you can to ensure one of those entities has the least attractive options?  If you're Mike Slive, and you don't have the academic restrictions that Jim Delany does, would you want to be aggressive and potentially shoot down one of your biggest competitors?

Most of all, if the ACC has the eastern seaboard locked down, do you want to further entrench your dominance into the southern states with schools like Louisville or USF, or do you extend your stretch into the Heartland, where there are much more ardent football fans and keep three rivals together and bundle them with an SEC school that's never had one?

Mike Slive and Jim Swafford can destroy the long term viability of the Big Ten with five schools.  If you take Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Notre Dame, and UConn off of the table, the Big Ten's options are almost nil to get to sixteen.  ISU and Rutgers are good academic fits.  After that....

No one that wants to lose their job. The contracts and money that changes hands over ratings data is insane. I'll put it this way, if KU really owned the KC market, every time they have a home football game not picked up for TV, each local station would be scrambling to air it locally. Instead, KU has a pretty big casual basketball following in the city, nothing else.

The numbers that would produce the most lols though would be media buying in the KC market. Despite "owning the market" KU spends a shitload just trying to get its own "fans" to show up in Lawrence.

Mu is such a whore for the Big Ten they would call Delaney the minute the SEC floated an offer like the KC schools to the SEC.  KC schools to SEC would be in all three's best interest in the long run but MU would never go for it.

I am praying see KU, KSU and Baylor to SEC to form a pod with ATM; ISU, MU, ND and Rugters or somebody to big 10 as a solution that keeps lawsuits to a minimum.

why would ND ever join the ACC without trying to get a bid from the Big 10 first?  I just can't see the Big 10 ever allowing Notre Dame to get away in any circumstance ever.
