On the other hand, a Big Reject DOD has some appeal.  We could get all pissy about being left out of the BCS or other system.

I thought about this the other day. Would it be so terrible to be in a conference that we can win every year, and possibly be a Boise State or something? Would be so terrible to a Memphis of basketball? I know neither of these scenarios are ideal. But I can think of far worse fates.

if we're talking about a 64-team superorganization that doesn't let anyone else play in the big time, then yes, it would be utterly, utterly terrible.

This is pretty much what it's always been like for fans of North Texas and San Jose State and SDSU and Louisiana-Monroe, huh?

Sorry, little guys, for never giving you a chance.  It took us getting relegated to the outside for me to realize how shitty this exclusionary big boy club is.

This is very different. We've been there and done that. Then are getting kicked out.

It will some down to: how and can Athletic Departments detach themselves from their schools?

They could easily, from a corporation standpoint, detach from the university, but be associated with it.  They practically are now.  The real issue will be if they do this, then will congress remove their not-for-profit status, causing them to now have an employee/employer relationship with athletes....which will then ultimately mean unions. That road doesn't seem like a reasonable road or one that will be well received by the masses.  Congress would f'ing destroy that, imo.

They will separate themselves, but at the expensive of every sport besides football and basketball. The amount of scholarships for "Olympic" sport athletes is about to take a nose dive.

What happens when KU and Mizzou go to the Big10 and Baylor gets invited to be the 16th SEC team over us?

The ACC takes UCONN and Rutgers to get to 16. The SEC takes UL and WVU to get to 16. The big 10 finally convinces ND to join and takes MU with them. Then they look around and see no other viable options so it's either KU and ISU at that point or poach a couple of ACC teams. They poach the ACC taking Maryland and Virginia. Then the ACC is looking around for two more viable replacements and it's either some combo of Cincy, S. Florida, Baylor, ISU, TCU and BYU or the sweet package deal of KU and K-State. Cincy is shittier than K-State in athletics and academics so they are out TCU and Baylor are shitty small religious schools so they are out. S. Florida is out cause they are a shitty school in a state the ACC already has a big footprint in. ISU offers nothing except an AAU rating so they are out. BYU is way too far away so they are out. The ACC would love to have blue blood KU in basketball and K-State also adds to the basketball picture so it's a no brainer here. They take KU and K-State to get back to 16.

ACC just upped their buyout by $10MM, doubt anyone is leaving.

I wouldn't count on any team turning down the big 10, no matter what the buyout is. You all can sit back and think the sky is falling but I'm still feeling confident we will end up in one of the super conferences when I look at who the options would be in our place.
shouldn't your white trash ass be camped out at b-dubs?

it's already gone down. it's not necessarily the non-bcs affiliation, but the breaking of regional rivalries.

http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2011/09/rutgers_remains_in_contact_wit.html

Rutgers has been involved in talks with the ACC about possible membership over the past two days and its lines of communications with the Big Ten have remained open and "are active," according to a highly-placed college official.

freemarket?  i think you overestimate people/congress wanting big gov't in their sports.

it's never a free market.  always govt regulation/interference/oversight.  always.

but if we believe in a free market, do athletic departments want to legally have an employer/employee relationship with athletes?  the ramificiations would probably lend itself to having only a select few athletic departments that could afford such a thing...and athletic departments would still have to be Title IX compliant because congress would extend the Act to include universities that sponsor or affiliate with said athletic departments.  It would be a damn mess.  Girls sports would cease to exist.  A university couldn't afford to provide them.  Especially since they are provided at the expense of revenue generating sports, which would now be corporations.

I agree with you 100%.  Just being pessimistic that most Americans are more worried about gov't involvement than having to support women's sports.  Hell 99% of this message board would vote to overturn title IX.

EerSports.com reported earlier that WVU appears to have sent paperwork to the SEC, all signs point to WVU being accepted once A&M is settled

you guys have to remember that Pitt, Rutgers, WVU and Syracuse only had to freaking invite some CUSA losers to retain AQ status. I mean seriously.
