Ignore Big 12 presidents postpone Friday meeting ... Reply
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Big 12 presidents were supposed to gather on Friday to talk about the future of the league, a Big 12 administrator told Orangebloods.com.
But that meeting has been postponed indefinitely until Oklahoma and Oklahoma State can vocalize with certainty what their plans are, the administrator said.
Oklahoma made it clear to officials from Texas during a meeting on Sunday that it considered the Big 12 dead with Texas A&M moving on to the Southeastern Conference, sources said.
The seven-member board of regents at OU was unified in its desire to apply for membership to the Pac-12 at that time, sources said. And Oklahoma State was expected to follow suit, the sources said.
But Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott has indicated the Pac-12 doesn't want to be the catalyst that triggers mass realignment in college athletics, sources say.
Scott may be waiting to approach his presidents and chancellors with the porposal of adding OU and Oklahoma State until Texas A&M's move to the SEC is complete, which could take awhile.
Three schools in the Big 12 - Baylor, Kansas and Iowa State - have voiced publicly that they will not waive their right to sue the SEC over its potential acquisition of Texas A&M.
If the Pac-12 is waiting on Texas A&M and the SEC, this process could be on pause. Sources close to Texas have indicated the Longhorns are still fighting for the Big 12. But if OU and Oklahoma State can not be convinced to recommit to the Big 12, Texas is seriously considering a move to the Atlantic Coast Conference, sources said.
Oklahoma officials were hoping Texas would be on board to join the Pac-12, sources said. But that does not appear to be the case.
The one thing we know in realignment is that the longer it plays out, the more chance there is for change.
But with OU and Oklahoma State still mulling their futures, Friday's meeting of the Big 12 presidents has been postponed.
Stay tuned.
