Although let’s say god does fall asleep at the wheel and we do get in the pac-12, I feel just terrible for CU. Those beautiful looking, fantastic smelling people deserve better than to have to deal with the stench of Okies and Kansans coming to Boulder.
It will be amazing.
but really, the longer things are silent, the more I think the Big 12 survives.
I dunno. Nothing about any of this is logical. At all. I mean, everyone’s cool with A&M leaving, not thrilled, but everyone is willing to go out get a team or teams to fill out the conference…then OU’s imperial wizard runs his mouth off and even if you say that he’s doing it to posture or get something out of UT, it’s damn near the most absurd way to go about it. I mean, if you’re a manager of an apt building and you’re concerned about your buildings fire codes or potential fire hazards and you’ve got tenancy available, you don’t start a fire and then see if you can get the building owner to make some fire code changes and then expect people to line up for admittance. I’m of the belief that they (ou) want to go and are just figuring out a way to do so, that’s why it’s taking so long. 70/30 collapse/stays together.
I think we're seeing a couple of things at play here. First, "It's Patterson!" writ large. Especially for the schools "with options," there are probably different factions or power players that are interested in different options, and they likely each have been leaking "info" to the media to try to get momentum toward whichever option they prefer. Thus, the reason we see so many stories that claim we're headed down so many different roads.
Also, we're facing essentially a conference Cold War. Remember, the NCAA presidents have been insistent over the last decade that they do not want a playoff, but 16-team superconferences seem headed directly down that road. We're hearing a lot of "we're not looking to expand, but if someone else does, we'll have to reconsider" from the BCS conferences. I.E., if another conference hits the red button on the superconference nuclear football and goes to 16, maybe the Cold War turns hot. The question is whether 16 is the trigger, or whether, say, the PAC 12 could get away with adding 2 more without triggering it.
So what's likely happening right now is a crapload of phone calls between all the different presidents and conference folks trying to figure out the ramifications if an OU and OSU head for the PAC 12, or Texas goes indy or ACC..."so if we take these 2 more, that's cool"? You also have the bowl reps calling around trying to stabilize things because they don't want to head down the playoff road. It's kind of a Mexican standoff, where everybody's trying to make sure they're not going to get shot before they make their next move. But because there are so many potential scenarios in play, it takes a lot of time and leads to a lot of differing stories leaked to the media as the different interests try to use it to their advantage.
And, of course, you've got the additional factor that nearly everyone in the media wants a playoff and wouldn't mind helping things along to get there.
