Maybe KU can be talked into being basketball-only too.

I thought they already admitted that was the plan when they hired Gill.

16-20 team super conferences work in basketball.  Everybody plays everybody once.

More than 12 just doesn't work in football.  And 12 is the top limit.  Anywhere from 8-12 is good.

The old WAC did before they broke apart and became the WAC and Mountain West.

I was thinking the WAC...  How did they work out the schedule?  I've never really paid much attention.

I was thinking the WAC...  How did they work out the schedule?  I've never really paid much attention.

They had four 4-team pods that basically amounted to Far West (1), Mid-West (2), Mid-East (3), and Far East (4).  From this they formed two 8-team divisions.  The plan was for the first 2 year pods 1 & 2 would form the West Division and 3 & 4 would from the East Division.  Every 2 years pods 2 & 3 would switch divisions.  I don't think they even got through a 4-year cycle before it broke up.

They had four team pods.  I don't know the specifics other than the fact that they all hated it and decided to split.

From what the hamburgler said, it sounds complicated as hell.  eff that noise.  If you only play certain teams from your conference like once every 4 years, whats the point in even being in the same conference?

I suppose they could set up their conference schedule as a tournament.  That wouldn't be any good for planning road trips though.

Why Pitt?

Texas needs ND and they need leverage to get ND to make the move.  As we all know ND plays their other sports in the Big East.  Their football team can stay independent for awhile but their other sports must be in a conference.  So, Texas' best option is to help facilitate the break up of the Big East, or at least make it seem unstable enough that ND wants to jump that sinking ship.  The ACC has also been rumored to be looking at some Big East teams, especially if SEC #14 (15?,16?) come from the ACC. So why Pitt?  Its not about wanting Pitt, its about what Pitt jumping ship does to the Big East and creating inertia for ND to do something.

The eastern half of the Big 16 would be:
Notre Dame
Pittsburgh
West Virginia
Louisville

Missouri
ISU
KU
KSU

The western half would be:
New Mexico
AF
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St

TTech
Texas
Baylor
New Mexico

You guys nailed it.  16 team conferences won't fly in football.  12 team conferences are essentially two conferences that have championship game but still play each other at least half the time.

10 teams is the absolute max if you want to play everybody every year.

How about this?

Aggie leaves and the Big 12 adds Pitt, WVU, L'ville, Syracuse, Boston College and Navy.  That puts us at 15 and pretty much destroys the Big East.  Notre Dame's home for the non-football programs is in trouble.  The Big 12 offers the final spot in their new "Big 16" to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame plays Pitt, BC and Navy pretty much every year and has some history with Cuse, so there would be some history that would make this attractive to them.  Plus they have a strong presence in the northeast from a fanbase perspective and this allows them to play a lot of northeastern schools.

The eastern half of the Big 16 would be:
Notre Dame
Pittsburgh
West Virginia
Louisville
Syracuse
Boston College
Navy
Missouri

The western half would be:
Texas
Texas Tech
Baylor
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St
Kansas
Kansas St
Iowa St

If we happen to lose Mizzou to the SEC in the process, add UConn or Cincy or Rutgers to fill out the eastern half of the league.  Notre Dame would be in a conference where they would play 7 games against the eastern half of the Big 16, which includes at least 3 of their regular rivals.  They could also play one or two crossover games with the western division (annual matchup with Texas on Thanksgiving?).  The two halves would essentially function as individual conferences with some strong scheduling ties (which is what super-conferences are anyway...).

TV networks would love it because the conference would have a strong presence in the highly populated Northeast as well as a strong presence in the highly populated state of Texas.  It would include some powerful tradition-rich programs.  The annual championship game could alternate between Cowboy Stadium and the Meadowlands, with a stop in there every once in a while in Indianapolis.  The basketball tournament could be on a rotation from KC to Dallas to NYC.

I really am amazed that people continue to talk about 16 team conferences.  No one wants to share revenue with 15 other teams.  The media buyers aren't going to keep making the pie bigger because the conferences are bloated.  They aren't going to shell out more money for non premium entities like Kansas, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, Boston College, etc.  There are only about 20 or so college programs that media buyers give a damn about, why would they give more money to unnecessarily added bloat?

For each team to get $20 mil in revenue a year the combined media deals would have to be worth $320 million a year.  No one is going to pay that.  To put that number in perspective the current SEC deal is for $150 mil per year and that deal is only 2 years old.

What's better, 1/2 of $14MM of Big 12 money or $4MM of Mountain West money?

I hate it when Chip tweets a link an article that 2 days old and acts like its brand new.  When I see a new tweet I get  :comeatme: but then quickly go to  :flush:.

National Big 12 expert weighs in: http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/32295/sizing-up-the-big-12-expansion-candidates

If you add up the percentages he gives of each of those schools joining, it comes out to 162%.   :dunno:
