House hearing on Texas A&M and the SEC postponed ... Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Texas Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, the chairman of the House Higher Education Committee, has postponed a hearing looking into Texas A&M's possible move to the SEC because the SEC presidents on Sunday said they were happy with their current 12-team alignment and took no action on Texas A&M.

Here is Branch's statement ...

“The August 16, 2010 hearing of the House Higher Education Committee on collegiate athletics has been postponed.

“Yesterday, Dr. Bernie Machen, on behalf of the Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors, stated that the member institutions have, at least for the time being, reaffirmed their satisfaction with the ?present 12 institutional alignment.?

"While events may continue to evolve in the coming weeks, at this time, there is no immediate need to evaluate the merits of an athletic conference reconfiguration involving Texas A&M University and, potentially, other Texas public universities. If the current situation changes, our Committee is prepared to convene.

“The hearing was scheduled to allow a broader public evaluation of the merits of pending athletic conference reconfigurations, to provide more transparency to our citizens and taxpayers, and to encourage an outcome that best serves the state of Texas. The Committee's intent was to be responsive to a pending reconfiguration involving major public institutions of higher learning with wide-ranging implications; not to micro-manage individual university decisions or to presuppose a certain outcome.

"As many of us have worked long hours over the last several days, I appreciate the spirit of cooperation and many efforts of our university leaders and regents affected by the recent events, especially those by the leaders of Texas A&M University. Texas A&M is one of Texas?s finest public universities. It is a Tier One national research university of the highest order, steeped in historic and innovative traditions, both in the classroom and on the athletic field. Whatever her bright future holds, we all want an outcome that is in her best interest, the best interest of our other outstanding universities, and the best interest of all Texans.”

MY TAKE: When it appears that Texas A&M to the SEC is heating back up again - and A&M sources say it will heat back up again - look for Branch to reschedule this hearing.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M regents went into executive session at 3 p.m. to take action on a new chancellor - former state comptroller John Sharp - and to give A&M president R. Bowen Loftin the authority to handle any and all matters relating to "conference alignment."

A&M sources continue to tell Orangebloods.com the Aggies expect to be announced as members of the SEC within three weeks. Those same sources say the SEC is looking to expand to 16 teams and not just 13 or 14.

Rumors that Texas Agriculture University is going to split from Texas Maritime University and both the Big12 and SEC are satisfied.

For everyone worried about K-State not ending up in a BCS level conference think about this for a second:
-There are currently four BCS conferences with 12 teams (Pac-12, SEC, Big Ten, and ACC) and then there's the Big 12-2 and the Big East (8 teams currently with TCU going in 2013). That gives a total of 67 teams by my math.
-If major realignment happens like everyone anticipates, there would be four superconferences of 16-18 teams (most likely 16). That would mean at worst, only 3 teams are left out.
-3 teams being left out is kind of like musical chairs, you have to make sure you have a place to sit when the music stops. I personally think that K-State offers a lot more than several teams when it comes down to being one of the last few in (wouldn't be interesting to see Joe Lunardi do a bracket on realignment?)
Here's how I see everything happening:
SEC goes to 16
Pac-12 becomes Pac-16
Big Ten becomes the Big 16
& the ACC and Big East become one Frankenstein conference with the 8 Big East teams that don't play football (ND, Hall, St. Johns, Nova, Providence, etc.) being in their own conference.
So the big question is: Where does K-State go and would they get left out? answer: Frankenstein conf. or Pac-16 and no they wouldn't get left out for several reasons.
Things K-State has going for them: academics - We've had our fair share of Rhodes scholars, we have NBAF and we have a little brother named ku. I don't see how we get left out considering these factors.
So the next question is: Who gets left out?
Well considering conferences want to add by even numbers (i.e. SEC wants A&M only if they get another at same time) or if they have an odd number (Big Ten last yr) then they only add one or three then you want to make sure you have a dance partner (ex. KSU and ku), you also want to make sure you have a good athletic program (KSU and ku in bball, KSU in fball - kinda) and academics (obviously) and you have a TV market (Kansas City). All of these factors will be huge when it comes to realignment. Teams I think will probably be left out will be: ---Iowa St., wtf do they add to any conference? no dance partner, terrible at sports, no tv market, See ya ISU. ---Baylor, yeah small school, no dance partner, they do have the Texas market but they have barely any students add in their religious views and no athletic tradition=no BCS conf. ---last school is tough it may be TCU (I bet they stay in a conference tho) or Cincy or a school similar to that.
conclusion:
With all of these factors in place I bet K-State will be in a BCS conference if we see megaconferences in the future. Conferences just won't pass up something as good as us.

I don't know.  I think they start working the back channels extremely hard to get into the Big Ten assuming they go to 16.

If the Big Ten expands again, I think there's a good chance they make the second cut.

MANHATTAN — While Texas A&M is welcome to remain in the Big 12, Kansas State president Kirk Schulz said today that the conference should aggressively pursue options if the Aggies leave.

"It would be foolish for the Big 12 Conference not to do some contingency planning," Schulz said in an interview with The Eagle.

"That's why I think we're pushing hard to keep A&M, but we're really looking at as if they decide to depart, who do we want to add? I look at those as parallel, not, 'Well, we're going to wait until we hear from A&M and then look at what to do next.' We really feel like we need to be ready to go."

Should Texas A&M defect from the Big 12, presidents and athletic directors from the conference's other nine schools have told Schulz they plan to look at adding teams that will return the Big 12 to a 10-or 12-team league.

"That is the clear direction that the board of directors wants to move in," Schulz said. "The chances of seeing a nine-member Big 12 for any length of time are pretty small."

Schulz said there have been no "significant" talks about who those additional schools could be, but the Big 12 does have a plan in place to evaluate potential new members.

"You don't want to just add a school to be simply adding somebody. It needs to be somebody who fits academically and athletically into the conference," Schulz said. "Some of the discussion has been really focused on, 'Let's look at candidate schools and evaluate candidate schools.' After evaluating candidate schools, then we decide do we add one? Do we add two? Or do we add three?

"That's when we ask ourselves, 'What's the right number to go to? We'd rather do that than get too hung up on here's what the exact number is. You've got to look at the candidate schools really closely."

Schulz said the Big 12's current television partners — ABC/ESPN and Fox Sports — will also have some input on who could be considered. But they will not be involved in the final decision.

One thing the networks have already told the Big 12: as long as it stays at 10 teams, its television contracts will remain unchanged.

"That's what we've generally heard so far to the board," Schulz said. "Now I have to give a caveat that the nature of the specific school added will have some influence over that. But our media partners have been pretty up front that if we got to 10 that deal should pretty well stay intact."

if MU learned anything, it's that a cracka in the hand is worth more than two cracka's in a bush.  if stability is offerred, MU will take it, imo. The question is whether they will be asked.  I'm under the assumption that A&M is trying to get MU to come along because it would be an orgasmic bon fire for them to (a) leave texas and (b) be the ones that forced texas into a situation they didn't want to be in (pac-12).
