Can't wait till we go to a conference that has academic restrictions that make the SEC look like the ivy league.   :emawkid:

Might be, that the only way to stay out of the toilet is to crawl into the sewer....we'd have to become the Fresno State of the Plains.  Just take every goddamn partial qualifier that can fit into a jersey.

There may be some bumps in the road for Texas A&M and the Aggies' ability to make a clean break for the Southeastern Conference.

Dan Branch, R-Dallas, the chairman of the House Higher Education Committee told Orangebloods.com on Saturday that it would be "highly inappropriate" for the Texas A&M Board of Regents to take any action during a Monday meeting that would finalize a move to the SEC.

Branch called a hearing of his committee for Tuesday and invited Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin and Texas A&M regents chair Richard Box to testify about why this would be in the best interest of A&M and the state of Texas.

"It's my understanding the regents meeting on Monday is to begin negotiations, not complete them - assuming the SEC extends an offer," Branch told Orangebloods.com. "It would be important to the Legislature that the regents not complete anything before lawmakers get to ask some questions.

"It's my understanding from talking to A&M officials that it may take a week or two weeks to finalize any conference realignment anyway."

On Friday, Texas A&M moved up a meeting of the regents from Aug. 22 to Monday - one day before Branch's scheduled hearing on Texas A&M's current situation. The move looked like a game of beat-the-clock with lawmakers.

An administrator at a Big 12 school told Orangebloods.com that the Atlantic Coast Conference has a meeting planned for Monday with its 12 schools to reaffirm their commitment to each other.

This comes after Doug Gottlieb of ESPN reported that Missouri, Clemson and Florida State could be joining Texas A&M in the SEC.

Missouri athletic director Mike Alden denied any contact between the Tigers and the SEC to several media outlets, including PowerMizzou.com. Behind the scenes, Missouri is also telling the rest of the Big 12 that any contact with the SEC hasn't happened.

A Big 12 official told me that Oklahoma continues to tell the rest of the Big 12 that it is not interested in joining the SEC. The SEC definitely reached out to OU during its courtship of Texas A&M, the source said. The source said Bob Stoops has indicated to OU officials that the best path to win championships is in the Big 12, not the SEC, in part because the Big 12 no longer has a championship game.

The New York Times reported Saturday that an SEC official said there is a 30 to 40 percent chance the SEC presidents will reject Texas A&M as the 13th member of the conference.

Two sources told Orangebloods.com the SEC presidents are expected to meet at 10 am Sunday in Atlanta.

The New York Times report said SEC presidents are concerned about the perception of being a conference raider.

A source inside the Big 12 said there could be legal action against the SEC if it appears there is tortious interference on the part of the SEC in helping to break Texas A&M's TV contracts in the Big 12.

A Big 12 source said if the ACC reaffirms its commitment to each other, and the SEC doesn't have a 14th school to invite, the SEC presidents could balk at bringing in Texas A&M.

The Big 12 athletic directors - minus Texas A&M - are scheduled to be on a conference call at 3 p.m. CT Saturday.

They will discuss Texas A&M's situation and what a 9-team Big 12 would look like and what the league should do next - if anything - in terms of possibly adding one or more schools if A&M moves on.

Before last summer's realignment, the short list of schools to add to the Big 12 if a school ever left included BYU and Air Force, according to high-ranking sources in the league.

Houston has been mentioned as a possible candidate, but two Big 12 officials told Orangebloods.com on Saturday that Houston is not high on the list of replacements.

The Houston Chronicle reported Friday that Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe told an unnamed A&M official that Texas was the key to the Big 12 and that the league would survive without Texas A&M.

Big 12 associate commissioner Bob Burda told Orangebloods.com Saturday, "That's patently untrue misinformation from an unnamed source."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ESPN senior VP Burke Magnus told me there are provisions in all their TV contracts to be adjusted for both contraction and expansion. It was pre-arranged in the Big 12 TV contract that if a school comes out, ESPN pays the league $10 million less.

So ESPN was in position last summer to cut its payout to the Big 12 by $20 million per year with Nebraska and Colorado leaving. Of course, ESPN didn't cut its payout to the Big 12, which helped hold the league together.

Magnus wouldn't tell if there were set amounts in the contract to increase the payout if schools are added to a league or if there has to be some renegotiation. But Magnus said there are provisions for adjustment based on expansion.

Quote
"He said talks have been under way with the Pac 10 and a way to work out the LHN. OU is so ready to make the jump they are green lighting the LHN now that they are working their own deal. Tech and OSU just happy to be included and politically they won't complain about either school's network. He said if Texas, OU, Tech and OSU do make the jump, the pact 10 has plans for a system to determine a conf champ. He said it's ground-breaking and will change the way college football determines a champion. He said Texas is in a great position and will come out of this better than any expected. More money, bigger games, and more exposure to the program than ever before."

Big 12 ADs confirm support for a 9-team league ... if necessary ..   Reply
The Big 12 athletic directors - minus Texas A&M - pledged their commitment to a nine-member conference during a call Saturday afternoon if the Aggies were to bolt for the Southeastern Conference.

But the Big 12 ADs are reaching out to A&M to stay in the Big 12.

The ADs decided if A&M left and the league was to expand, it would be by only one school, sources said.

The early candidates would include BYU, Air Force, TCU and Houston, sources said.

But the Aggies will not go off to the SEC without some questions directed at both Texas A&M and Mike Slive, the commissioner of the SEC.

There appear to be real legal questions from the Big 12 about the SEC’s role in A&M’s apparent decision to leave the Big 12 and if tortious interference is involved in possibly breaking the Aggies’ contracts with their current television partners.

Multiple sources said the 13-year Fox television deal signed by the Big 12 in April for $1.17 billion can be voided if Texas A&M leaves. The sources said if the SEC, which has had ongoing conversations with Texas A&M since Mike Slive was on the College Station campus during last summer’s realignment, could be seen as the instigator in A&M’s actions, it could constitute a $1 billion lawsuit against the SEC as well as a lawsuit for damages against individuals involved.

A&M’s lawyers have also been looking at the legal ramifications of a move to the SEC, a source close to A&M said.

The Big 12 engaged in a high-dollar ad campaign earlier this year to promote the new, 10-member conference that will roll out during football season. And officials across the Big 12 are wondering if Texas A&M knew even then that it would try to relocate to the SEC.

Sources close to the situation say Sunday morning’s meeting of the SEC presidents - believed to be in Atlanta, according to one source - has become the most important moment of this year’s college realignment drama.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive, who has said, “I can get to 16 schools in 15 minutes,” now needs to convince his presidents that he knows what he’s doing. According to sources close to the situation, only Florida president Bernie Machen and Georgia president Michael Adams have been in contact with Slive about the SEC’s current expansion plans.

The other 10 presidents will apparently be getting a whole lot of critical information from Slive on Sunday. If those presidents, who heard a report of the SEC possibly adding schools such as Missouri, Clemson and Florida State from ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb Saturday, are not on board, this story could take a serious left turn.

The New York Times quoted an SEC official who said there’s a 30 to 40 percent chance the SEC presidents could reject Texas A&M.

An official at a school in the Big 12 said, “If you asked me last night, I would have said it was 90 to 95 percent that Texas A&M was gone to the SEC. Now, I would say either 50 percent or less. The SEC meeting on Sunday is huge. If they hit the pause button, I don’t think it happens.”

Several sources said if Texas A&M was to stay in the Big 12, it would take a lot to rebuild the relationship between Texas A&M and Texas but that it was doable.

House Higher Education Committee chairman Dan Branch, R-Dallas, told Orangebloods.com Saturday he has received assurances from A&M that the Aggies’ regents board won’t be finalizing a move to the SEC on Monday.

Branch on Thursday set a meeting of his committee for Tuesday and invited Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin and Texas A&M regents chair Richard Box along with Big 12 and SEC officials to discuss the Aggies’ plans.

Then on Friday, A&M’s regents moved an Aug. 22 meeting to Monday, one day ahead of Branch’s committee hearing in what looked like a maneuver to out-flank lawmakers. But an A&M source said the regents were likely to vote on Monday to empower Loftin, the school’s president, with the ability to make any decision in the matter on behalf of Texas A&M.

An administrator at a Big 12 school told Orangebloods.com that the Atlantic Coast Conference has a meeting planned for Monday with its 12 schools to reaffirm their commitment to each other.

ACC commissioner John Swofford released a statement Friday that said, "As I've said previously, we'll continue to be mindful of the collegiate landscape and what's best for the ACC and its member institutions. With that said, I've received no indication from any of our 12 Presidents that they have any intention of being affiliated with any conference other than the ACC."

Gottlieb reported Saturday that Missouri, Clemson and Florida State could be joining Texas A&M in the SEC.

Missouri athletic director Mike Alden denied any contact between the Tigers and the SEC to several media outlets, including PowerMizzou.com. Behind the scenes, Missouri is also telling the rest of the Big 12 that any contact with the SEC hasn't happened.

But a source close to the situation said Missouri may be able to deny everything right now because talks between Mizzou and the SEC haven’t started yet. However, for the SEC to avoid any legal liability in terms of tampering or interfering with the Big 12’s contracts, sources have said the SEC needs schools to approach them and apply for membership. Important semantics as the maneuvering unfolds.

I hear Oklahoma, OK State and 2 other B12 schools approached Big Ten as package and were told no. Academic reasons.

oh man

jfc.  Goddamnit.  I'm officially in panic mode.

Here's the thing, who was it?  Couldn't have been Texas.  ISU wouldn't get the time of day from OSU/OU.  Mizzou allegedly courting SEC.....was it KU/KSU?  LOL if it was.

yeah, that's the only "logical" combo...but, like, that still seems illogical.  can you imagine?  ku/ksu and ou/osu showing up at the door of the big 10?  ku and ksu at the back porch step trying to make sure each of their bolo ties were straight, osu trying to make sure that it's money clip is "kinda" showing in its hand but not blatantly obvious, and OU spritzing itself with some Polo cologne....then nebraska answers the door.

The only real thrills in all of this for me?

1.  Watching Missouri get pwn3d by the Big 10 last year, and hopefully watching the same thing happen to A&M this year
2.  People's analogies, especially catzacker.  The man is an analogy whiz.

Sounds like 8 conference games with a 4 team playoff for the champ.

the talk is four four team pods and not a east and west or north and south.

This idea could be our save.  After the SEC takes Mizzou, A&M, West Virginia, & Virginia Tech and the big 10 take ND, Pitt, Rutgers, and Maryland (or Virginia-only 2 AAU schools left because they won't take KU or ISU) the ACC will have 10 teams left and six spots to fill.  At this point there will be 10 schools for 6 spots.

We propose this pod system to the ACC.  Take KSU, KU, and a combo of Baylor, ISU, Louisville, Cincy, and TCU to make a west pod.  Have your other 5 conference games be random from the other 12 teams.  Each team has a 3 team non-con and 8 scheduled conf game schedule.  After 11 games the 4 winners enter a playoff.  Your last game will be against a team in another pod you didn't play that finished in the same position in their pod.

The key to this system is it gets rid of the 8 team division problem we would create with the ACC.  The biggest problem is which 2 of the 10 would be forced to be in a west division because none of the existing ACC schools would want to be in that division.  In this case no one is forced into the west.  The South pod is Miami, FSU, Clemson, and Ga Tech.  The NC pod is the 4 NC schools.  The north pod is BC, Vir/Mary, Syracuse, and UConn.

The other option is to have non-geo pods, but keep 2-3 local rivalries in tact.  The other 2-3 conf games come at random from the rest of the conference.  Either way, we get rid of the what to 2 teams go to the west in the current ACC problem.
