There are no more good options for expansion.

Is reclaiming Nebraska unattainable?  Stealing Louisville seems ideal too.

Is their large offer to Herman a sign that they know they'll be getting a piece of the Big 12 pie?

They just dumped $25 million into a basketball training facility, and AECOM had plans drawn up a few years back for a $40 million renovation to Hofheinz Pavillion. When TDECU Stadium was completed a couple of years ago, it was intended to expand from 40k to 60k.

The UH President has been very open about putting her foot on the gas for a Big 12 invite. I guess in some meeting with their big donors, allegedly, she said that the next two years were the most important in UH history.   And she's consistently tweeting about spending time with Ken Starr and other Big 12 presidents.

They hired Kelvin Sampson after his show-cause expired. They're going for broke.

The prospect of adding Houston and some other team that no one gives a crap about playing just makes the Mountain West seem more appealing.

I definitely do NOT want Houston.  However, the Mountain West is dirt poor relative to the Big 12.  Let's just wait until football is banned, THEN look into the Mountain West.  Until then, let's just ride this annuity stream.

If you go to the equivalent thread on the Shag, there's actually "support" for Houston among the active realignment followers. Now, when I say "support", it's like accepting that the dinner you are about to eat is edible, but not what you wanted.

The consensus among the Texas guys is that Houston can easily be as competitive as TCU if they keep hiring guys like Briles, Sumlin, and Herman, and if they get an invite and access to our resources, they may be able to keep one eventually. The talent pool in Houston is just too ridiculous not to field a bowl level team almost every year with just signing local kids.

I see their potential, and I like them a lot more than Memphis for several reasons. Again, rumor on the Shag is that Houston is who OU wants, and the primary drivers are academic (Tier 1, big endowment), and a fairly well accepted theory that Boren has been working a side deal with Fox to get a Big 12 network sans Texas (we'd still get their road games on the network).  Again, this is supported by Fox owning T3 rights to so many of our teams.

Also, to respond to a separate comment, the other accepted theory is that Bowen wants to stay in the Big 12, and regardless of whether or not they make the playoff (which of course they will), he's still going to push because of this dialogue he's been having with Fox. In essence, he will double down to prove that it's not about the playoff. OU fans that aren't stupid are very pro-Big 12 because they realize how financially solvent we are compared to the Pac 12 and ACC, and how rough ridin' stupid it is to wish for home games against Iowa and Minnesota.  The OU/KU Big Ten/SEC bullshit is mostly coming from t-shirt OU fans and KU fans, who are desperate for KU football not to be Futility U, and they see any change as helping them do that.

It's also believed that Fenves (UT pres) is open to expansion, but former AD Patterson wasn't even open to listening because of any threats to short term revenue. It's also believed that Boren's campaign earlier this year was a shot at him, and not really anyone else. He was apparently universally reviled by everybody.

Pan wants conference expansion more than anyone else on this blog wants anything. It never ceases to amuse me.

Also, I never want known trash athletic program BYU in our conference. Ever. For any reason.

It's not our problem, but what does Houston do for WVU in regard to a travel partner and getting another team in that time zone :dunno:  Also seems that 3 years ago UT was thought to be the most against U. Houston in any circumstances?

Houston is easy to get to from a travel standpoint.  You have a lot of options getting in and out of there if you're WVU.  You have a couple of major airports, a ton of commercial flights, airstrips, etc.

Also, it's not so much a travel partner as it is having a geographic 'buddy'.  The Pac 12 had set up a model a long time ago where you'd stack road games in similar geographic areas so you could cut down travel.

For example, in basketball, you'd have a Saturday game in Pullman with WSU and a Tuesday game in Seattle.  Then you'd have your homestand the following week with a weekend game and a week game.  Rinse and repeat.

Well, in this instance, it would make things easier for WVU because folks could do the Cincy/WVU thing.  Also, it gives WVU at least one road game every other year in football that their fans can easily get to, and vice versa, so they can actually get some visitors purchasing some tickets.

"Travel partner" is a lazy term.  It's more of a scheduling partner.  Also, it gives them another friend to take early games in the Eastern time zone, which would benefit all of us complaining about 11 AM start times.  Noon games on the east coast are fairly common and more easy to stomach.

To answer the second question, I think there is political pressure.  The old argument was that Texas couldn't support all of these P5 schools, and they'd all suck if another was elevated.

Well, as of now, Texas only sucks because they have a lot of self-inflicted wounds.  Baylor, TCU, A&M, and Tech are all performing at, or above, historical averages.  And then you have Houston sitting there with a very real shot at a "CFP" bowl game.

Houston has made a huge push in the last several years to move beyond commuter school to more of an established university.  They're like Louisville, but just several years in reverse.  They've attained Tier 1 status, they have an endowment nearing $700 million, and they're starting to see more on campus, invested students who see it as a four-year experience.  Texas, the state, would like nothing more than to see Houston continue to ascend in prestige because, as of right now, it's the only Tier 1 school in Texas, with a law school, that isn't in a P5 conference (Texas and A&M are the others).

Texas, the school, has been battling with the state since Rick Perry was there, so what UT wants is kind of secondary to what the state will dictate at this point.

Houston is a sucky mid-major.  we can try to rationalize all the reasons why they would be a good partner, but at the end of the day, they're a mid-major.

Houston only makes sense if the Big 12 is desperate to expand for the sake of expanding. Even if the Big 12 decides it needs a CCG, it's still possible to do so with 10 teams, so I don't think we're at that level of desperation yet.

BYU might have its issues, but at least adding them would definitely fatten the bottom line.
