I'm now more convinced that we are headed to a Super League.  I just watched today's press interview with HC Mike Gundy and he talked about a very interesting subject.  He read a DM this morning about how Clemson is going to break away from the FB dept. as it will be a separate corporation.  This will give them more freedom to decide how they will handle congressional decisions if it is decided.  They may not share the money with the BB/Olympics sports or worry about Title 9.  Grundy said they are looking into this as with other schools.

This may be the untalked-about secret sauce the big-time media columnists are hinting about the "big changes" in FB coming shortly.

I think it's more like looking at ESPN's own revisionist history of realignment, which is very big 10 and SEC heavy, and also hints at a super league, but that league being big 10/SEC, but like w/o the Vandy's/NW

This talk of separating FB from the schools and the money they will not need to share is the key to big changes in how conferences will be funded with only BB/Olimpic sports to offer for the network contracts.

The one big thing is what happens to conferences.  Do they poach off their schools' funds from the Super League?  Are new conferences formed that have Olympics and non-revenue sports?  What happens with BB?

They’ll exist for sports other than football. They might exist within football, but they will do as their NFL/TV
overlords tell them.

 

Do you think the P4 won't be affected by the conference network income?  Would you split them up to align with the Super Leagues?

I personally think the odds are against a super league happening. If it did happen, I would think the Super League would have enough power to do away with conferences if that is what it desired.

You know they are saying the media contract would double at a minimum due to the bargaining power of 80 teams.  I think it will happen, due to the greed of the blue bloods.  I am unsure how it would work for the schools not in the Super League.

Watching the TCU Stanford game with my dad who only watches CFB if someone else is and he sees the ACC logo on the field.

Dad - Huh, TCU is in the ACC now?

Ben ji- No, TCU is still in the big12, Stanford is now in the ACC.

Dad - wow, they must have got a lot of money to join a conference on the Atlantic Coast!

SMU story fascinates me even after 40 years...  It will get interesting if they have some immediate success in the ACC.

Once the super conference shakes out, there may be some regional re shuffling amongst the teams?

Is SMU with their cash a fit for the Big 12 at some point?  Do our current Texas schools fight this?  Maybe they have already.

I noticed the stadium was maybe half full.  They'll never make it as a real Power Four school with that support.  The most puzzling thing about SMU is that it prides itself as an FB school, so it can't use the BB excuse for the lousy support.

It’s tough for private schools with low enrollments to fill stadiums. Notre Dame and BYU are the only ones I can think of that pulls it off. Baylor seems to do just OK at attendance. USC’s stands are always full of vacant areas. Same with Miami.

And the two Pete mentioned have entire religions behind them. The Baptists and Methodists don't have the Baylor and SMU pride like the Caths and LDS do for ND and BYU. I know more than a few Cath families from Kansas for generations that love ND. Never met a Baylor fan that is a Baylor fan because of their Baptist ways.

Reports say that the two Pac members will use the $65 million they retained after the other schools departed to pay the $10 million buyout the MW schools have to pay to leave the Mountain West.

That's fine, I just thought at one point there was talk of a merger, and negating and sort of need to "buy out". But maybe I'm misremembering (probably). Especially since I am sort of surprised they only added 4 schools, and still need two more. I suspect UNLV is coming next

I've gotta think that Cal and Stanford would sooner go independent or end their athletic programs before being associated with a debilitated Pac-12 full of junk-tier schools.  I hope their athletes enjoy spending half their time traveling across the country.  Those long flights will be so prestigious!

If the thinking is that the new Pac-12 will get leftovers if/when the ACC breaks up, I guess that's fine, but they'll be getting sloppy fourths after the SEC/Big Ten/Big 12 (Wake Forest? Syracuse? SMU? Boston College?). Would you even want those schools if you're a regional conference in the MT/PT time zones?

Seems like they also don't have the time to wait on that, so they'd need to get to 8 sooner.

9 footbal playing members allows for an 8 game RR in football w/ a 20 gm RR in bball.
