Question.

If this was the SD ranch or some other actual operation that cares about more than cats do you knock the tumbleweeds off or just leave them to break down? I've read (probably from little house in the prairie) that if you get a blizzard the tumbleweeds will catch the snow and the cows will just walk over the fence, is this true? Our cow farmer doesn't have his cows out on our pasture now so no harm no foul.

If you do have to clean out the tumbleweeds from the fence what is the best way to do it?

I'm a generation removed from farming but I personally would burn them

Not at the cat ranch but my dad borrowed one from his buddy this summer to mow up some weeds. Is that the answer? Just mow both sides of the fence?

cross post from cooking thread

now if I shoot a ripened angus (I have multiple times usually because it was hip locked from trying to give birth) I would simply eat it because it's delicious. though thinking back on it we never did that and put them in the dead cow pile instead so maybe you aren't supposed to eat pregnant cows for some reason I am not aware of and never cared about enough to know.

is there a reason we didn't just haul these cows to the butcher to be turned into ground beef? I have no idea. I have distinct memories of being handed a mini-14 and having to put them down when they were suffering. kind of not something I would personally hand off to a 12 year old even with my upbringing but I'm sure my dad had reasons. guess it didn't really traumatize me given what I knew about cattle and ranching but still seems kind of weird. also one time we were out in it and found one suffering who couldn't birth a calf. didn't have a rifle for some reason even though my dad usually had an armory buried somewhere in the truck. tried to put her down with a 9mm and, folks, that is apparently not enough to do it. skull just ricocheted off. she was pissed at me, but not dead or dying (more than she already was). sorry if this was a gory post. just like to post stuff as it comes to mind.

GORY TRIGGER WARNING: I think I have posted about it in this thread before but we used to find cows not able to birth a calf and hook the calf feet (they come out front feet first ideally) to a chain and use fence stretchers to crank them out. One time it got desperate and my dad hooked his truck up to them and pulled the front feet right off the calf. pretty bad scene obviously. the cow was done for either way if we didn't get it out so end game was the same either way and had to try something. beef are bread for two things 1) big weight 2) low birth weight so they can be actually born. Sometimes 1) gets too much for 2). tricky genetics juggling match. It's why my dad went to Angus/White Charolais cross last I knew. though that was years ago and he's always tinkering with it with our herd. He said the Charolais had lower birth weight.

I think that's what they eat in prison

that's the best part of prison idiot

source: my buddy from HS spent 24 hours in Meade jail for a DUI (got to pick when he served it and picked like 5 months after the fact because it fit his college schedule) and that's what he told me. also your family can send you money to spend at the jail convenience store (like to your jail venmo or whatever) and a guy we knew growing up was in there and his grandma sent him like unlimited funds to spend at the jail convenience store and they had a fun HS reunion in Meade jail. the guy we knew was in there longer term for like theft and whatever. also if you wake up first you get to pick what's on the TV in the community room or whatever.

a huge money maker for the Meade community is that we built a huge modern jail. well, we don't have a lot of criminals in Meade thankfully (other than the guy we know) and Liberal and Dodge would pay Meade to send us their bad guys. Pretty nice gig for Meade! other than the time they did a jail breakout and beat up the jail teacher and escaped and then ran two and a half miles from Meade and stole one of my dad's like 50 different tractor/truck/etc. things that he just leaves the keys in and tried to make a getaway with it and my dad heard them and blasted his own dang truck with a gun and they lost it and flipped the truck over in a ditch and had to hightail it into some fields and a helicopter from some city (dodge, liberal, garden? who knows) finally showed up and they did a big manhunt of them and caught them finally and one of them tried to kill himself from dinking a bunch of brake or transmission fluid or something that was in the truck. anyway, I asked my dad "why did you shoot at your own truck and make it flip over in the ditch?" and he was like "they were stealing it" and that made sense I guess.

also it wasn't like a pickup truck. It was a big truck that pulls our large bail grinder. bad choice idiots, maybe drink transmission fluid about it (he didn't die so this is not mean).

Super nice trail from Kansas river clear to Olathe.  We're close to Merriam portion, and we walk it a lot.

@steve dave you never answered this question. Is the tom solution of mowing right next to the fence the correct course of action?

if it's hotwire we take a 4wheeler down it and pull them off. otherwise I don't think we do anything with them.

also, correct me here, but didn't your pops buy some fence to specifically catch the snow for some other stupid reason?
