These were the windbreaks on TomDad ranch.  Old industrial tires from Goodyear in Topeka.  Never did the cow-calf in winter thing.  Feeders in winter was enough.

Good luck to you all dealing with this next week.

The wife and I squeezed into the coveralls this morning and ran out to the farm to inspect and pay for the new barn lighting.  The wife has florescent orange bibs she got years ago.  I had her run in at I70 service area to grab us a breakfast burrito and some KTA snow truck Karl hits on her at the cash register saying she could ride with him in his plow in those bibs.

That's pretty much all she has talked about all day...

At least the barn is well lit when I end up living in it.

Tom, that was a great story that made me chuckle and smile.  Thank you for that.

how will that baby cow find it’s mom after this cold weather?  do they smell butts like dogs or do they just not care about the mommy cow/baby cow bond because too dumb?

If it’s a 24 hour warm up it should be easy to put them back together. They do smell each other or something. Not 100% sure.

Sometimes my dad will sprinkle a chowder from the vet on the baby calf to get the cow to claim it. I've heard of taking the hide from a calf that died and tying it on the back of the calf that you want the momma cow to claim - don't know if it works or not. Some cows just have a better maternal instinct than others.

My dad's cows are starting to hatch out their baby calves this week. One froze to death before he could get in warmed up. He has a special warming box in the the shop to get them reheated. Their fur has zero insulation value when it is wet with afterbirth. Brutal week for cowpeople and their cows.

yeah, land is wild. that's exactly what you get in Meade right there. and it is as garbage as not officially desert land gets.

Part of me thinks they just bought it for the water rights but another part of me thinks this is another example of brrrt and people have to spend money on something.

Probably a lil of both...but I'm just a city boy who stands to inherit a cat ranch.

Can't wait to go in depth on my dad's plans for our land in 2021. I still don't know the full plan because it changes every couple of months but as of now it involves him managing the irrigated circle and contracting out the work. Then leasing out some pasture to be broken out and renting some pasture as is. Maybe some CRP as well but that's confusing as F and we have got conflicting info from different government agencies.

March 1st is the drop dead day!

There was a Russian who was bidding on whole farm. The locals were bidding it up to keep him out ( or so I was told). Same guy has bought a lot of land of out that way lately.

Looks like someone didn't keep a healthy barn cat population and is now paying the price

Getting the new space organized so my son can post pix here in a decade of all the stuff I am about to accumulate.

That vice came from Santa Fe shops in Topeka.  Dad mounted on a table with inch thick plate on top.  Moved it with skid steer. No idea what it weighs, but I couldn't budge it .
