if it's not a blood diamond, it's not worth having.

"hey sweetheart, i bought you this diamond that no one even died for.  no slaves, no jungle, nothing.  yep, it was grown in a lab.  a sterile lab filled with sterile white scientists."

anything worth having is worth working for, even if it's not you doing the work.  a diamond grown in a petri dish?  i'll pass.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

I would not live and die by the 1 karat or nothing position. Going in debt for a ring is stupid and based upon everything you have shared on gE, you would have to go in debt to buy a 1 karat diamond.

Yes, going in debt for a diamond is stupid, but the whole concept of shelling out 100x the price for a diamond that is visually no different from a CZ is also stupid. That's perfectly right and logical and you can tell yourself that as much as you want, but here's the simple reality: most women are just really, really stupid when it comes to the desire for diamonds. You only get to do this once, so do it right even if it means going into short-term debt. Make her proud of what she's got on her finger. I just can't emphasize this enough, size is the most important factor. Go 1 carat or bigger. It also needs to be certified as an Ideal or Excellent cut. Color and clarity are where you save money. They're not nearly as important.

And even if you've got a buddy who says he can get you a great deal, I'd encourage you to at least price compare online to make sure you're really getting a good deal. Try this: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/p2/?CaratFrom=0.95&CaratTo=1.26&Color=D,E,F,G,H&Clarity=IF,VVS1,VVS2,VS1,VS2,SI1&Cut=Ideal,Excellent&PriceFrom=200&PriceTo=5520&Sort=Price asc, DefaultOrder
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

For once in the history of the planet, I agree with K.B. K-S-U-Wildcats on pretty much everything in his post. (Not the misogyny.) Cut is key. One carat is nice if you can swing it. Do not use your buddy without pricing identical stones at places like Brilliant Earth and Blue Nile. I used Brilliant Earth for the diamond, and had a Canadian Friend do the band--Wacky, that may be a way for you to make your buddy happy without it costing you a ton of money.

In retrospect, I would have used B.E. for the stone and the band.

Misogyny? Would it help if I also conceded that guys are really stupid about spending money on other impractical things? Muscle cars, golf, etc...

Diamonds are a waste of money from a logical perspective, but they're important to most women. This is just one time when you suck it up and make her happy. That doesn't seem very misogynistic.

Make her proud of what she has on her arm. That will also make her friends more envious than anything else and make her happier than anything you ever put on her finger.

Talking to some lady friends about this and if you are wanting to save some cash I'd suggest looking into lab created diamonds, or better yet hybrid diamonds.

HYBRID DIAMONDS:

The most beautiful and affordable diamond alternative on the market
Mimics the look of a mined diamond because it is infused with diamond
Large selection of shapes and carat weights ...countless possibilities.
Unmatched beauty: D-F color, VVS1-VS2
Individually cut to the highest standards
4 out of 5 jewelers can’t tell the difference
Adored and owned by celebrities you love
Diamond technology also used by some of the worlds most prestigious companies
Free shipping, warranty and trial period
Only $358.00 per ct.

Check it out here:

You can also put  a hybrid diamond in a setting you find anywhere. The word on the street is that you can't tell that the main diamond isn't real even next to real diamonds in the setting.

In this situation it is dependent on the lady in question. I suggest honesty. If anything she'll be impressed you got such a good deal and how great the ring looks. If you know you need to add this tidbit, you could plan to buy her a real diamond for say. . a ten year anniversary. It is a financially sound decision and you aren't putting off snagging that special lady because you are making payments.

Go the Ringpop route.  She'll love it!

I once proposed to a girl at a tailgate with a box of ring pops.
