I thought it was a little lower than that, but it's a good rule regardless. Lots of missclassified workers on salary are making less than min wage when you compare hours worked.

If you are working 80 hours a week making $47,000/year, you are averaging $11.30/hour. Nobody is making less than minimum wage making $47,000 per year.

The bigger issue though is companies gaming the system and missclassifiying exempt workers. Basically add "manager" to someone's title and they are exempt even though they don't manage a thing

a.  the system they are gaming is overtime, so your math should include it.
b.  not all hourly employees earn the federal min.  most don't.

Shift "manager" on a IT help desk accepted a $40k salary to work 40 hours a week.
Employer requires shift "manager" to put in 55 hour weeks regularly.

Prior to this rule, that employee would not be eligible for overtime.  Now, that employee is entitled to overtime.  Employee now is compensated for overtime.

I'm not sure how it will work, but the company will probably get to stop paying overtime to the $47,000 per year guy as soon as he hits $48k.

Edit: Actually, the limit is $47k, so the person making $48k will end up with $48k and the person making $47k will end up with $47k.
