great fix, chings. thanks for taking the time.
no problem guys, it's what I do: fix things. anything else wrong with cfb I can fix (I am changing the thread name to reflect this)?
how about the problem of preseason polls? I don't think they're "fair", but they affect the end-of-season polls.
Well (for one) the rankings discussed in the playoff fix will be similar to the cfp poll now (determined by a committee so not AP, coaches, etc.), and will not be released until all P5 teams have played 2 conference games. For the rankings, the committee will go through two cycles.
Cycle 1: they get only objective statistics (which ones? the committee will decide before the season which set, but it will be the common sense ones like wins, losses, points scored, points allowed, yards, hopefully possesion based stats as well, but NO stats that claim to adjust for strength of schedule or are based on anything other than box score information). Team names are anonymized. So, for example, you would get KSU's stats but it would say this is "Team 34"s stats (this ID number would change every week so a committee member can't remember that TCU is "Team 12"). Each committee member submits their rankings and the results get combined. This will be the baseline rankings and team names will get re-attached.
Cycle 2: using the baseline rankings, the entire committee debates and adjusts to seed the top 32 teams. Here "eyeball" tests and strength of schedule can be argued, but arguments should still be grounded on the data from the baseline rankings. The top 25 is released. This is the ranking used to seed the playoffs.
As for the AP and coaches, well you can't stop people from making polls so you let them.
