It's all situational. If you have an awesome life and are out with friends on big occasions in awesome places and you get loaded, that's awesome. If it's a tuesday night and you're pounding shots with your two drinking buddies you see every other day down at shot stop, it's kinda sad. No judgement here, just my take.

It sounds like he's worried about perception more than anything else. If you enjoy your life and are having fun who cares. I mean don't listen to me because my life blows right now so what do I know.

I would say 99% of this board are alcoholics, but fun ones. So that's different.

What exactly is worrying you?

Like, I'm pretty sure it's at least a little detrimental to your health when you black out. Also, wouldn't want to get to a point where I had to stop drinking all together because I couldn't keep it under control.

the older ive gotten the better ive gotten at "welp tonya youre a little mumped up. time to go home."

This.

I used to pound beers/shots/bombs  3 or 4 nights a week in aggieville.

Then I graduated and would binge on the weekends, usually at least 1 night.

Then I got in my mid 20's and would think "Wow, its already 12:30??" I'm kinda drunk and should probably get a cab home before they are all gone"

I'm almost in my late 20's now and barely go out  :frown:

blackout drinking is not cool.  i had to stop drinking from 26-32 because i was a blackout drinker.  hopefully you don't have to learn the hard way like me.  it took me waking up in a jail cell with no memory of driving drunk and getting arrested the night before.  hopefully you can be wise and mind the subtle and not so subtle advise that efriends and irl friends hand out.  maybe someday you can handle drinking a little and stopping, maybe you never will be able to handle that.

i got lucky and only emotionally hurt family and friends.  i am still so thankful that i never killed someone on that night or any other that i blacked out.

Yep, it's not about "having fun", it's about staying safe and out of jail. If you can't control how much you drink....you can't control yourself.

Detrimental to your health as in bad things will happen while you're blacked out (going to jail, injuring self, etc.) or just that blacking out has some isolated effect?

There is a direct correlation between IQ and desire to drink as well.

I'd define addiction as use of the something to the point where it damages yourself (mentally or physically), ruins relationships (friends, partners, children, family, etc.), or causing you to lose work/suck at work/call in repeatedly.

Also, only you can determine whether or not you are an alcoholic.

wow, we share the exact same view on cake (Betty Crocker has discontinued the funfetti frosting which is why it's hard to find). I probably drink more tho.

It's all about limits. Freshman and Soph. year, I'd blackout relatively regularly. Obviously not the most flattering way to present yourself. By Jr. year, the key was to simply not buy more alcohol than you could drink. ie: instead of getting a case and splitting it with a buddy for a tailgate, get something less.

I don't know what it is about the way my brain works, but since I bought 15 beers I feel like I MUST drink all 15 beers or it's a waste.

However, when you get to the bar scene it's much trickier. I would simply suggest sticking with beer or if you hate beer than just to go with the watered down shots that you can get. Also, living near Aggieville, if I feel like I'm already too drunk and ready for bed or to get some late night food I can just walk the 5 minute walk to my apartment. Having a close out to leave the bars is also a major key, IMO.

I try to drink less by buying 4 packs instead of 6 packs, but these 4 packs are often 8+% alcohol, so I end up getting just as pak'd. What do?
