Dirty plays are punished in every other sport, why should baseball be an exception? I am fully in favor of this ruling. It was a bush league slide and Utley shouldn't be rewarded for it.

1. The play happens all the time, the MLB is being reactionary. If they were truly concerned about this type of play, guys would be suspended all the time.

2. The player was called SAFE by MLB officials in New York City, and not ejected from the game.

Both true, but this sets the precedent for a rule change and we'll probably now see it handled like blocking the plate.

This is reactionary, but I agree with MLB's new stance. This isn't the Ty Cobb era. If they're going to protect catchers at home plate then they need to do the same with middle infielders turning DP's.

Then change the rule in the offseason. Everyone will get it. You can't suspend Utley for something that no one gets suspended for but happens weekly in baseball.

You can't "oh by the way, that's now frowned upon, you're suspended" because a guy got hurt in the playoffs. You can't have a "new stance" on the way a game is played after 100+ years in the middle of a playoff series.

I agree, but that's how rules change in sports all the time. When someone gets their leg broken on a big stage the reaction is generally going to be significant.

I agree he shouldn't be suspended but think it's ok if mets tee off on his dome with a fastball

The fact that it occurred in the playoffs shouldn't be a reason to give Utley a free pass. Neither should "this is how it's always been".

Sports and their governing bodies evolve...this was a step forward for MLB.

no. that was unlucky. sometimes when conact is allowed dudes get hurt. it was unusual. If tejada doesn't do some awkward 360 no one even remembers this play.

That pitcher would be ejected immediately without a warning. This suspension will eliminate some of the aftermath bullshit that goes along with a play like that.

i'm fine with evolution. ban those slides this offseason. This was NFL style make up the rules as we go

IMO he shouldn't be suspended.

But in the era of concussions and societal equality this fits in quite nicely.

it's rough ridin' bullshit tho

it would be like if they suspended AROD during the 2004 ALDS for Roids. "uh by the way, NO MORE ROIDS"

oh good grief. he was trying to avoid 2 outs (he was called safe, and allowed to continue playing the game by MLB officials) not trying to break someone's leg

They call it a takeout slide for a reason. If anything this guy should get a monetary bonus for being more successful with the takeout slide than others less willing to break legs of opposing players

Regardless of if he should be suspended or not for this series that play has no place in baseball and should be severely punished going forward
