I’ve got something controversial to say, if you can handle it:

Football has the worst system for spotting downs and checking distance. Just automate it and half of the issues with referees are suddenly gone. Line Judges rough ridin' suck at their jobs.

There should also be a strike system made for refs so that way we can get new blood up in the big leagues. I don't rough ridin' care about your service time I just want the game called fairly.

Do you remember how bad the games were called when they brought in replacement refs?

ultimately it’s always much easier to call someone else a sellout until it’s your name on the check
high speed internet & napster in the early 00s killed any hesitation to not sell out across all genres

I often wonder what nirvana would have become in the 2000's.

Probably still better than anything from stp

Listened to some podcast the other day (can’t remember title, might look it up) and it was this guy who wrote a book about the 90s but tried to look at it from the viewpoint at the time instead of with hindsight and he was like “the thing about the 90s is there was this huge import on being true to their art and “selling out” was like the worst thing you could do and nirvana was really struggling to reconcile that fact bc they were getting so popular “

And I’m not sure what I can extrapolate from that but I would tend to agree in the 90s selling out definitely seemed to be frowned upon

I just started this book and he says that right at the very beginning. I think it makes even more sense in the author's larger context of Gen X apathy and disinterest. Selling out means you care about success.

Chapter 1 is entirely about the concept of selling out. I thought it was fascinating. He talks about how people who weren't a certain age (among other demographics) during that time have serious trouble understanding the concept. And he makes this interesting parallel with Reality Bites. Like, boomers and millennials view that movie in very similar ways, yet many gen x-ers get something completely different from it.

Chapter 2 so far is about the cultural phenomenon of Nirvana.

For anyone interested, it's The Nineties by Klosterman.

I might agree with this, especially if you include cost. I've been like 3-4 times and every time I thought it was fine, but way overpriced. Plus I have heard that the owners are shitbags. Apologies if that isn't correct and they are reading this, your bbq is just overpriced and just ok sirs and or madams.

No better way to sell out than to franchise your restaurant.

I agree with football being awful at spotting the ball, but how would automation work for forward progress? Wouldn't it just work better to have an additional referee in the booth, or dedicate a replay official just for spots?

I thought I saw a tweet during the NFL playoffs that they already have tracking chips in footballs but the chips aren't very accurate so that's why they still have humans involved.

Put a microchip in each ball to tell where the ball is. They already know where each player is on the field how much harder is it to track the ball. I truly believe tech and 3D imaging have came a long way there is no reason why they can't figure something out.

I'm fairly confident I could kick the living crap out of college me. My friend brought this up and completely disagreed with me. I currently weigh about the same. I was prob stronger in college than I am now, but I still think I would take out young dumb me fairly easily.
