That would be Post Malone right now, probably. Either that or Nas.

Write a USA national anthem in the style of Father John Misty

Verse 1:
Oh say can you see, the land of opportunity,
Where dreams are made and lost in the name of liberty,
The stars and stripes still wave, over a country that's so brave,
But tell me, what's the cost of this endless charade?

Chorus:
Oh America, land of the free,
Where everyone's chasing their own destiny,
But tell me, where's the love and empathy,
In a nation built on individuality?

Verse 2:
From sea to shining sea, we're all just chasing money,
Selling our souls for a piece of the American Dream,
And if you're born with less, you gotta fight to be the best,
But tell me, is this the promise that we were all blessed?

Chorus:
Oh America, land of the free,
Where everyone's chasing their own destiny,
But tell me, where's the love and empathy,
In a nation built on individuality?

Verse 3:
We've got a history of pride, but also of genocide,
And we've still got a long way to go before we're truly unified,
We can't just turn a blind eye, to the injustices that lie,
And pretend that we're all equal, when so many still cry.

Chorus:
Oh America, land of the free,
Where everyone's chasing their own destiny,
But tell me, where's the love and empathy,
In a nation built on individuality?

Outro:
So let's come together, in the name of something greater,
And build a future that's truly inclusive and fair,
Let's learn from our past, and make the changes that will last,
Oh America, let's build a better world, together we can surpass.

I’ll have to get a refresher on the whole story, but the ending is that novoselic and sergio have beef.

No walk-ins!
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

That one “have you been in an accident hotline” commercial…I thought spokesman ROB did a fine job and did not need to be replaced by tv personality Tom Mustin

I often wonder what nirvana would have become in the 2000's.

Probably still better than anything from stp

Listened to some podcast the other day (can’t remember title, might look it up) and it was this guy who wrote a book about the 90s but tried to look at it from the viewpoint at the time instead of with hindsight and he was like “the thing about the 90s is there was this huge import on being true to their art and “selling out” was like the worst thing you could do and nirvana was really struggling to reconcile that fact bc they were getting so popular “

And I’m not sure what I can extrapolate from that but I would tend to agree in the 90s selling out definitely seemed to be frowned upon

I just started this book and he says that right at the very beginning. I think it makes even more sense in the author's larger context of Gen X apathy and disinterest. Selling out means you care about success.

I remember noticing a HUGE shift with some hip hop artists back then. Like, it was way different that some of them were totally transparent about being all about the paycheck.

yeah, i'm a bit of a 90's rock nerd and there is a really good book called Everybody Loves Our Town that details the alternative movement in Seattle from the very beginning. A lot of those dudes never really wanted to be famous. It just kind of happened with some of the bands. That's why a lot of them died, they couldn't handle it. Some say that while Cobain said he hated the fame, that was just a front and he really liked it which made the demons stronger because he had to keep up the act.

I was a big MetallicA fan back in the day. Do you guys remember when they cut their hair and were immediately labelled as sell outs?

here’s common in 1994 rapping one of the better hip hop songs from the 90’s which happens to be about how going mainstream killed hip hop.  i love this song to this day, it’s a masterpiece.  his record company didn’t send me a 12” vinyl, they sent me a cassette single, which I played the living crap out of on my radio show.

here’s common 12 years later rapping in a GAP commercial

ultimately it’s always much easier to call someone else a sellout until it’s your name on the check
