sounds like fanning got fleeced by future family.  not a good sign 

They do a lot of great things for us. That Catholic charity ball that I went to was like $250 a plate there. They also did a lot for Christmas. They're a nice family, but one particular bro is questionable and I think that's why it played out like that at the anniversary dinner.

I have seen wealthy people act very uncomfortable because a dinner guest basically pushed the bill towards the wealthy person. Not saying that is what happened that night, but that is what your above post sounds like.

Yup. I ordered water and their cheapest steak salad, while everyone was drinking scotch on the rocks and dining with filets.

I think I have it figured out.  I'm going with a gift cert to a fancy massage place that will get her 2 great massages or 1 for her and a friend, a sappy ass V day card, and take her out to dinner the night before or night after Vday somewhere somewhat nice... like Chili's... not Tanners.

I didn't want to make a scene. It was their special day. They don't need, fanning, fanning things up.

I just like to live within my means. Throwing around that much for dinner on a saturday night just doesn't make sense to me. I don't know if it's cheap as much as it is logical.
