I went to a game in SD in August 2001, his last season.  He wasn't playing much by then and didn't start.  In the 7th they were down 5-2 with a couple runners on.  All of a sudden the place erupted and Gwynn walks into the on deck circle.  He went in, took a few pitches, and effortlessly stroked a single into the gap.  It just looked very easy for him.  He was on a different level hitting to ball.
