Here's my deal with distance running.  I'm under the impression that cardiovascular can't be said to have taken place unless your heart rate is above some particular rate for at least 25 to 30 minutes.  That means like at least 3 miles, and that sounds just awful.

No idea if that's true or not. Not a doctor. But 3+ miles is actually great. And you can mix in sprints and stuff (they tell me).

Truth- Anyone who runs in 5finger shoes or glove shoes are idiots. Proof? You look dumb and you're destroying your shins and ligaments in your feet. Also comes off as bandwagony and desperate for attention.

False - traditional running shoes, and tennis shoes for that matter, weaken the foot muscles and keep the knees unstable causing meniscus and ACL issues as we age.

I actually used to get terrible shin splints until I switched to some 5finger-like shoes.  Before, i'd been over extending and running too far infront of my weight.  All those heel impacts where giving me shin splints.  The lack of padding forces you to correct your form (or you really feel it) and bad form causes more running related injuries than anything else.

The running shoe industry is kind of a scam.  Orthotics can be helpful to some, but they start off with the assumption that most people need them.  People in Africa and South America seem to do okay without them.

It took me about 2 months before I could run comfortably 2 miles.

my starting point was not having had run a full mile in 10+years.

I also asked my doctor for a steroid nose spray and inhaler.

I call them my performance enhancing drugs.

See, the thing is, your time was pretty much entirely determined by your level of fitness prior to training.  Given that you follow a training program, your race result isn't going to vary by much at all depending on whether you train at a 70 or 99% effort level.  The level of effort you put into your training likely did not improve your pace by even as "little" as 20 seconds per mile.  So, time really isn't really significant in that way.  Good job on finishing, though!

maybe time is entirely a product of the music you listen to, times the numbers of fingers on your toe shoes

CF3 is an absolutely adorable poster.  A real treasure.

Absolutely adorable IRL classmate too. Can confirm.

You guys in MHK should organize a Fatty 5K. Probably wouldn't be that hard to get permits from the city to block off certain areas for like an hour? :dunno:  Also most races get around $20-$30 from each registrant. No idea what the overhead/insurance/whatever costs are or what would come out of that to produce t-shirts for everybody, but it could probably garner a nice chunk of change. Maybe have it the morning of Fattyfest and just have everyone end at Aggieville and begin 'PAKing? Or like if certain posters aren't runners they could buy an entry for their friend who is a runner?

The great part of organized runs, at least here in Party Central USA is that they always have beer tents giving away free booze afterwards. Which, you wouldn't think you'd want to pound beers at 9 in the morning after running 3+ miles but it turns out it's actually pretty great once you catch your breath. Might just be a Louisiana thing though.

This would be awesome.  Pretty sure everyone would want to pound beers too...
