I just started watching the show on the advice of this chick I know who has watched it since the beginning.  I'm only about 7 episodes into the first season.  Great show, so far.  I can't believe how many episodes they made.  There's like 25 in the first season alone.  Luckily, they're available for streaming on netflix, as I imagine the season dvds are probably pretty damn expensive since they have like 5 discs.
i bought the dvd one friday and watched the entire first season in one weekend.  simply a terrible show, i recommend you turn around and go back down the street you drove in on.

pfft. call me the next time someone is executed by a smoke monster after they get "voted off" on american idol.

I "guess" the spoiler I posted was true, although I'm not sure I'd call Lepidus a main character.

That was the only death I really shed a tear for.  I'll cling to the hope that he somehow got out. Lost is not complete without a smart ass pilot

crossing my fingers for a "pilot saves the day" type moment. could really see Lapidus busting out some kind of John Mclain type joke as he rushes in.

I bet this episode is better than the finale.  :runaway:

If you consider that jacob has brought many people to the island over thousands of years and smokey has, in some capacity, been able to manipulate them, he could have gotten some of those people to build that thing using his influence.  I think the writers are leaving that up to our imaginations, like basically all the real "mysteries" of the show.

Probably smokey.

aha

what would have been the big deal if man in black would have left the island prior to merging w/ smokey.  i guess he was evil before he turned into smokey?  or did his mom just tell him he couldn't leave because she wanted him to protect the light?

mib must be some kind of genius quantum physicist to invent the time travel wheel.

wish we could have figured out why mib couldn't kill jacob with his own hands.  was that true before or after he became smokey.  i can see it not being true before he became smokey considering jacob actually killed mib.  but after becoming smokey he couldn't kill jacob because the light thingy that turned him into smokey told him no

my assumption is that at the beginning of the next episode (which is entitled "What they died for") there will be some vague explanation of the "game" that Jacob and MIB are playing (so maybe they hint at rules?).  I think the "they" in what they died for is referring to all the people that have come to the island and died, not just the Losties.

http://io9.com/5536860/last-nights-lost-was-cheesy--and-thats-a-good-thing?skyline=true&s=i

A pretty good write up. Kind of makes me appreciate it more. Also, here's one from the comments section that makes a lot of sense-

Quote
My take was that the light source is actually an evil entity that is trying to lure men to it in order for it to escape. But in order to be able to lure man inside, it needs to kill the one protecting it, as they are to stop man from finding it. But the smoke monster (evil) can't kill the protector by his own hand. He has to have a man actually willingly committ the act of murdering the protector. I think Smokey killed the MIB's entire village in order for him to seek revenge on his "mother", the current protector. When Jacob throws his brother the MIB into the hole, it kills his brother for good, and allows the evil smoke monster to take over his body/mind/memories. Hence when Jacob is sitting on the beach at the start of the season and the (evil) MIB shows up and states how he wants to kill Jacob, its not his brother stating this, its the evil smoke monster who has morphed into his brother. The same principle happens when Jacob is murdered in the statue. Smokey Lock (as the evil entity has now taken over Lock's dead form) convinces Ben to willingly kill Jacob. In doing so, he has stopped Jacob from finding another protector, as there are only still candidates around. His next step is to make sure that none of the candidates survive before they become the next protector. Hence why he tried to get them altogether in the plane/sub in order to blow them up.

The reason that I think that he the smoke evil is the esscene of evil is because of the line in which
"Mother" states that a bit of the light exists in each man. It seemed to me that the idea behind it was that a bit of evil exists in all of us. But it all depends on certain events, actions, and choices in our lives in order to see if it develops into something bigger and eventually takes us over.

I think that this is why the Evil Smokey first went after Mr. Eko. But Eko had turned himself away from the evil in his past, and was seeking salvation. Hence why Mr. Eko was killed he wouldnt allow the evil to manifest itself inside of him. (I know at the time it was due to the actor wanting out, but it helps with my theory).

John Locke on the other hand was an angry man who gave himself whole heartadly to the wishes of the island. For it he was given the ability to walk again. He is manipulated, and all of his actions are for the "good" of the island. He believes the "island" is rewarding him for his actions. But what if it wasn't the island, and instead it was the evil. Slowly working its way into the heart of Locke. I believe it was in season 2 or 3 when the Evil smoke monster grabbed him and tried to take him down into the hole in the ground. I think Locke was just a pawn in the overall game for the evil that is being held on the island. When he died at the hands of Ben, his anger and sadness allowed the evil to manifest itself and take over the form of John Locke, including all of his memories. This allows him to move freely among the group of Oceanic 815 survivors and manipulate them on the overall chessboard.

The reasons that the evil wants to get off the island, is because it wants to destory the rest of humanity. Hence Jacob's line that if it {smokey} gets off the island the world will be destroyed.

Anyway, thats just my thoughts in what was revealed last night.

good stuff.  didn't come to mind that smokey could have atually existed and taken out the village.  not sure if smokey could have existed w/o MIB being floated down the hole to the light.

agree there was a lot of cheese (and some really bad acting) but it was a overall a decent show.  expectations were very high.  they shouldn't have asked either of those characters to try and cry and/or show much emotion.  the mystery of these characters was their emotional detachment from the candidates and other losties.  getting to see the other side -the human side- of these guys was something i really didn't care about.
