Bill is responsible for like 10% of the offense.
I think this has to be part of it, I really believe he's turned most of the offense over to Dimel. I think Miller has a part, but from what I can tell its mainly Dimel's offense. That is the only explanation for Bill saying multiple times that Sams should have played more without throwing his assistant coaches completely under the bus.
I think playing Waters/running Hubert was the right thing because of how KU defended us. KU was not going to let Lockett/Waters beat them over the top like OU did and as a result they often only had 6 defenders in the box. I don't think we get that same look with Sams in the game.
The problem became that we'd run strange pass plays on 1st or 2nd down putting us into bad situations on 3rd down. KU rarely stopped Hubert and our zone or zone read running game for 2 plays in a row, but we didn't seem to trust it and would go away from it to kill drives. Or we'd go to under center with 2 backs, which allowed KU to put 7 or 8 back into the box because they weren't spread out. This just seemed to be a game where the play calling got out of rhythm with our mix of formations/play calls which is usually the strength of K-State's offense. I won't go too crazy about it because I really think once we got up 3 scores we (coaches and players) relaxed a bit and that let KU hang around.
That said, I give some credit to Hayes and the defense because we did a good job taking away the running game and made KU try to beat us throwing. Heaps made a few good throws, but he's just an INT waiting to happen so that plan worked very well.
It was a mediocre performance after we got the 21-0 lead, but I don't think its indicative of an epidemic. The problems today were much different than what happened against OU. This year's offense turned out to be a pretty good one, it just became sporadic. If anything this staff became too enthralled with the Waters/Lockett big play potential, so I was glad to see us go back to a heavy dose of Hubert today. We just got off rhythm on some drives which made the performance feel worse than it was.
I don't think its worth panicking and I don't think Sams is going anywhere.
