Did Bill Self mention this from the studio where he was not coaching an elite 8 team?   :dunno:

Curt looked like the only dude who wanted tone there in the first half... why they didn't feed him down low? I will never know nor will I understand. Still one hell of a season!

This is a neat talking point, and I won't disagree that Curtis should've gotten a shot or two in the 2nd half.

But, let's look at some facts.

While running the offense through Kelly in the 1st half we scrored 20 points, shot 35.7 %, missed both 3 pointers we attempted, and missed all 4 FT attempts.  Meanwhile, in the 2nd half we scored 36, shot 41%, made 5 threes while shooting 38.5% from behind the arc, and got to the FT line 10 times, making 7.

So really, Kelly not taking a shot is a minor point.

And it ignores the fact that we let Butler shoot 57.9% in the 2nd half, 50% from 3 and sent them to the FT line 16 times, making 11.  Compared to 37%, 44% from 3, and only 4 FT attempts in the first half.

All the while letting Butler outrebound us overall on the boards by 11 and on the offensive glass beating us 12 to 11.

In the grand scheme of things, Curtis Kelly not getting shot in the 2nd half would probably be about #10 on the "why we lost this game list" while playing terrible defense, getting killed on the boards, and sending Butler to the FT line 16 times in the 2nd half would probably be the top 3.

Again, we didn't adjust to this game becoming a grinder leading to a terrible defense and rebounding effort.  This only served to magnify a bad first half instead of allowing this team to find a way to grind out a win.

Kelly

He also seemed like a bit of a defensive liability out there, so that might have canceled out things a bit.

Defense really wasn't that bad.  We turned them over more than anyone (although that was canceled out by poor defensive rebounding).  Still, only 8 games were worse for them this year on offense.  Was our 2nd worst OR%.  Weren't getting putbacks off Clemente floaters we normally get.

Kelly played as well as he could have defensively, but rebounding not so much.  Unfortunately we got subpar rebounding efforts from everyone on our team.  And Hayward is really darn good, but unlike Crawford we didn't make him work his butt off to score.

Not a good job of keeping Kelly involved offensively.

Hey Ben, since you're back how is the Federal investigation of the ku athletic department going??

Forcing TOs was the main thing that even kept the game close.  But the number of easy shots and second chances we gave them was very non-JYC-like.  And led to our demise.

The number of easy shots wasn't really unusual.  The rebounding was, though.

They have the second-ranked D in the Big 12 because they force turnovers on no less than 24 percent of conference opponents' possessions. It's true that if you can just hang on to the ball against K-State, you're facing the equivalent of the Iowa State defense. (Both teams give up about 1.27 points per TO-less trip.)

I believe they said yesterday Butler was like 1.40 points per TO-less posession.

Fair point.

Also, Butler did an amazing job of not letting TOs turn into points or pace.

Yeah, they did.  I think a lot of it was how they dared officials to call fouls on transition (like they did everywhere).  If I were coaching against KSU that's exactly what I'd do - only Butler and KU really did it all year, and it bothered the hell out of us.  We didn't know what to do when someone hit us back.

this.  we got out k-state'd.  it works especially well in the tourney because the officials, for the most part, swallow the whistle.  I think it's one of the reasons mich st. does well (obviously they have talent as well, just sayin').
