I am much more concerned about Knight as OU’s QB as I believe OU (w/ a week to prep w/ Knight) will choose to try to run on us – I think they can be successful doing so.  For some reason, no one (except NDSt and UT, and OSU?) has really tried to run on us – therefore inflating our rush numbers.  We are not very good against the run and with Zimmerman out, I don’t think that helps.

On offense, I think OU will blitz us (I would do it on 1st down to get us behind) regardless of who the QB is as I think Mike will have learned from last year (and maybe popped in tape from the last game in Manhattan).  Our line doesn’t do well against the blitz and/or stunts and neither does Jake.  Sams will have to punish them for run blitzing.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "try to run on us"

OSU and WVU were the only opponents to have fewer than 30 rush attempts. No one since Texas has averaged more than 4 yards per carry.

The numbers; % of rush attempts.

Opponent   %Run
North Dakota St.   58.9%
La.-Lafayette   56.3%
Massachusetts   54.3%
@ Texas   58.0%
@ 11 Oklahoma St.   38.5%
3 Baylor   63.8%
West Virginia   41.4%
Iowa St.   48.6%
@ Texas Tech   33.3%
TCU   47.7%
Totals   49.5%

Yards per carry.

Opponent   YPC
North Dakota St.   5.0
La.-Lafayette   4.4
Massachusetts   3.2
@ Texas   4.8
@ 11 Oklahoma St.   3.4
3 Baylor   3.1
West Virginia   3.6
Iowa St.   3.6
@ Texas Tech   3.3
TCU   3.2
Totals   3.85

Yards per attempt:

Opponent   Yards/Att
North Dakota St.   5.5

3 Baylor   15.8
West Virginia   6.4
Iowa St.   3.5
@ Texas Tech   5.5

UT, NDSt wanted to run and did.  Baylor was probably the only team that made an effort and didn’t have success.  I simply don’t understand why teams don’t run more on us (although I realize that they may be geared more to pass and the 15yd cushions we give and our relatively shell coverage on most downs tend to make passing enticing).  Although If OU was smart, they’d have the same %run as UT or NDSt.  And if they do, I think we will have some problems (especially with Zims out).

Has anyone else noticed or been a little upset at Evans' effort on run support? I'm nitpicking, but it seems he takes plays off or is tentative often.
yes, he is infuriating to watch sometimes.. he seems to take plays off and can be a  real lazy ass tackler.

He takes really poor angles and doesn't account for where his help is coming from which shouldn't happen with his experience.
he also reminds me of dorn from major league.. a lot of this *ole*y bullshit when it comes to tackling

Good points. I think one big factors is that Knight has shown no ability to be a down the field thrower (<5 yards per attempt), which puts a little less pressure on the the defense. We'll see.

I don't hate OU at all. I kinda like them. It's a good old fashioned tough cold weathered football game against 2 upper echelon teams of equal stature. These types of games have all the indications and markings of instant classics. In 30 years we'll be reviewing these game films on internet vaults, just to reference the clown suit Snyder gave Stoops for his post game presser.

So do we line up in a base 4-3 this week instead of mostly nickel?  I know Evans has practiced at safety so maybe he plays there this week in Ty's spot.  The sad thing is I think Evans is a better tackler as the third LB than Tre Walker is.  No way Tre defeats the block and makes the sack that Evans made last week.

I feel pretty good about our chances. I would feel a whole lot better if Waters had some type of injury that was going to keep him off the field, though.

I hate OU with a passion. It would probably be one of my favorite wins of all time if we could just piss pound those clowns, something like 56-17.

Knight is a freshman right?

Who was the last freshman QB to win in Manhattan? Taylor Martinez?

This may come back to bite me, but I'm not sure Heupel will be able to withstand the temptation of the cushions we will give them.

A huge criticism among the OU fans is that he's trying to pass more than they should because that's what he's comfortable calling, and he doesn't have a good feel for calling a running game.

We will see.

If Waters doesn't adjust his arm angle and continues with his sidearm passes, I promise two INTs.

Meh.  He adjusts based on where the lineman is.  I don't have an issue with it.  It's paid off a few times lately.
