That does help. They're just a bit intimidating. The only thing that sucks is learning software. They've been around it way longer and say it takes awhile to know. Sometimes talking to IT ppl is like speaking spanish. I'm coming around though. I was 2nd on the team in sales last month and that was the first month I had an account list.

I'll be honest, Fanning, a lot of guys that sell software don't know how it's used.

A lot of times, they bring in subject matter experts to close a deal if people start asking hard questions.  I end up doing a sales thing at least once every other week for that reason.

You're most likely going to get in the door and bring someone else in to help you close.  If it's a really big deal, they won't let you fly solo if you're new.

Are you the subject matter expert and if so do you get a cut of the sales commission if they call you in?

I clarified that after editing.  I am the SME, and no, I don't get a cut.  However, the payback is in executive exposure.  The bigger the deal, the more eyes, and the more eyes, the greater chance you'll get a better review, better promotion, etc.  Helping sales/business dev is pretty good professional capital.  It's really helped me along in my job.

Our SME's have bonuses tied to certain segment sales, so it behooves them to offer genuine help.

And, WC, if you're nervous, that's fine.  There's always going to be some high pressure deal or something that will set the bar higher.  Your targets are always going to get bigger.  If they aren't, I'd suggest looking for a new job because the company isn't going anywhere.

Besides, intrinsic fear is a good motivator.  Not unhealthy fear promoted by bad managers, but fear of failing and not doing as well as you'd like.

Me too.  But generally I'm in favor of individual or small team type bonuses as opposed to if the entire $4B global company hit its sales goals.

If I don't know my crap well enough and I need you to help me close and you do help me close, then you should get some of the money I'm getting for closing.  If I don't like it, then I should get better.  If I want to hungry hippo those benjamins, then I need to be a smarter hippo, you dig?   (clams bait)

Precisely.  The boss hogs filling the trough should be first in line to eat from it.

Wacky, you should just find the meanest, biggest boss hog filly at that office and you know . . . take care of business. That way you will always be guaranteed a spot next to her at the trough, and you just know that's going to be a prime spot.

It depends on if you're a top or a bottom.  There aren't any power bottoms in big boy jobs.
