those movers sound really cheap.  i just assumed they'd be north of $1k for a local move in an average to above-average sized home

Professional movers are shockingly cheap IMO. Like, I think having them pack all the crap for me was like a $100 upcharge or something similarly stupid.

I wouldn't want my stuff being handled fully either.  Would be paranoid that something would be taken and I wouldn't notice for a while and by then, what are you gonna do?

I own literally nothing that valuable to me. I'm not a sentimental person.

I still got everything without any damage after two professional cross-country moves.

This should probably go in the hangover thread, but the power at my new apartment shut off last night. I decided to sleep there last night because I was intoxicated and it is much closer to aggieville that my old house. Waking up on the floor of that 80 degree apartment this morning was miserable.

5 professional moves. The only thing my wife packs is her own jewelry. (THEY ARE GOING TO STEAL THAT! (LOL!))
They pack everything else. Then, they do a partial unpack at the new house. I couldn't imagine doing it any other way.

Washer, ice maker, large framed pictures? We will send in a specialist to unhook and to rehook the water lines and to crate that picture up.

(Some of it is pretty comical, but it is totally the way to go.)

Why are people always acting like boxes are a controlled substance or something? "Oh you're moving? Hey we've got some boxes if you want them."  "eff, I need to get some boxes.  Hey do you guys have any left over from your move?"

Just go buy some from Uhaul or Home Depot or something.  They're $20 for a ton of them.  Then just throw them away/recycle.
You do realize that what you claim to hate up above is actually the best form of recycling, right?

professional movers are absolutely the best thing in the world.

i moved myself for the last time this time, but its because i was moving less than a mile away and had 2 weeks to make it happen, and just couldn't rationalize paying for it

And some people are so self important that they think folks on the internet should explain every little thing to them.  And even after they do, they're still wrong in your opinion, because you would absolutely live everyone's life better than them.

Some people on the internet want others to do some things that they might not want to do. They might want them to do it forever, but maybe the other person only wants to do it once. They probably would never do it if they weren't hiding behind the internet. And it might be enjoyable for one person but it is not very enjoyable for the other person.
