Nothing is stopping the NFL from drafting players outside of college football. Bryce Brown did nothing in college ball. He could have gone to the CFL for 2 years and still been drafted. He probably would have gone higher because there wouldn't have been concerns over character issues.

Non Canadians aren't eligible for the CFL until 4 years after high school.

Really? Well, I bet he could have played pro ball for that team in Salina, anyway.

I would like to see a link to the CFL age limit.  I know it was part of the Bryce Brown recruitment saga.  http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/04/bryce-brown-to-the-cfl/

Those guys make more in college than the cfl and they're getting a degree during that time.

I think free education and the absurd privileges that go along with being a college athlete (blank check to commit violent crimes against women, theft and truancy) is fair compensation for playing football in front of thousands of people. Particularly when this paltry apprenticeship could ultimately land you millions of dollars and said privileges in a major metro area.

I don't think Bowlsby should make more than the Sun Belt commissioner, because he works very hard as well.

I just don't feel like the NCAA institutions have any obligation to pay players just because the NFL has shitty rules.

I don't think logical folks are looking at it as an obligation, but rather as an issue of economics.  Rules create incentives.

What are they looking to incentivize?

I don't think Snyder should make more than the average faculty wage at Kansas State University.  And I don't think he should complain at that.  This is amateur, voluntary, student-athlete sport.  Nobody forced him to be a head coach.  He could head coach anywhere he wants.  Same goes with all of our coaches and administrators.  they should be paid like amateurs because that's all college sports is.  This is NOT a billion dollar industry, professional in all respects but name.

Snyder has an endorsement contract, gets a free car, has healthcare and 401K through the university, and a slushfund of additional miscellaneous benefits not quantified in his 2.8million salary.  We should pay him about $85K and he shouldn't complain.

If Kansas State doesn't want to pay Snyder more than a janitor, they don't have to. It is up to LHC Bill Snyder to decide if he wants to work at Kansas State for what the school is willing to pay. Student athletes have the option of not playing. The fact that just about everyone with the ability to play college sports chooses to do so tells me that the scholarship offered is plenty of incentive.

It's not about incentivizing participation.  It's about fairly compensating contribution.

It's an amateur league. There is no compensation. If athletes didn't think that was fair, they would choose to not participate.

Speaking of robots, the Stan-bot grilled Anderson pretty good about spotting of the ball, moving the chains and mechanics of the chain gang.

It is. It just happens to be successful. It really is too bad that nobody would watch minor league football. A second professional league for those kids who are good enough to earn money would be great. Unfortunately, there is just no market for that at all. College football would still be much bigger than minor league football, even if the level of competition wasn't as good. This is because it is built on the institutions and their alumni, not the athletes.

I think your points would be very solid pre 1980.  before endorsements, TV contracts, and commercialization of the sport.  It's a different world today.  Many college programs in the Big4 conferences involve more expensive facilities, more expensive coaches, and more expensive tv contracts than some NFL franchises.  every person involved with this BILLION $$$ industry, from the ad execs down to the sideline chain gangs are receiving pay checks.  everybody except for athletes, the very engine that drives this goliath, money printing machine.  I can't reconcile these realities in my mind.

We'll never agree.  it is what it is.

And it already begins how we'd get left out of the top 4 and hosed. With a Big 12 Championship.
