Even though we've won title after title #1straight I've heard that our AD and Pres have had serious discussions about basketball as a scholarship sport going forward. With the popularity of NCAA baseball on the rise, college basketball is about to fall off a cliff. We know that no one makes money from basketball, so I'm with Captain Currie and think its time to focus on our revenue sports.
Here are the facts:
Basketball popularity peaked in 1979 with Magic vs. Bird, last year's NCAA tourney drew an all time low rating and lost CBS 2 billion dollars.
Kids don't play basketball anymore, because of concussions. Baseball is now the #1 sport worldwide.
Only 3 teams even made money from basketball last year (KSU, Harvard, and Arkansas Pine-Bluff) and it is noteworthy that we were on the list, but is it sustainable? The average school lost 2.9 million on basketball last year and that's only going to rise now that the NCAA is cracking down on the rules.
I'm curious as to the thoughts of the K-State Wildcat Nation.
