But why? What are both parties hoping to gain from a face-to-face?

 I'm assuming that in a long term relationship, attempts to salvage it have already been attempted face to face. If you get to the point it can't be salvaged, just put it out if its misery with a clean shot (text).

Seems cowardly to me, but I could see how if you were hoping for it to end and the other person texted it was over, you might be relieved to just move on.

I suppose it's a little cowardly, but bravery is extremely overrated. That's kind of another thread.

I think duration of relationship makes a difference.  A date or two, text seems like it would be okay.  A month or less, a call seems alright.  Longer than that, I think you should go out for a cup of coffee.
