I kind of doubt Schlitterbahn hired any engineers.
The owners basically designed it on the fly.  They tested it with sandbags as the crash test dummies. :horrorsurprise:

Yeah, kind of like when kids put together a tower to run marbles down, only for grown ups.

they hired a structural engineering firm to ensure the structure was designed properly. they would not have been able to get the project permitted without one. the functionality of the ride is unrelated to the stability of the structure. there is no review or permit process that i know of for the safety of the functionality of a water slide, which is pretty wild.

I was so confused by seeing that tweet of an axle then heard it hit a dump truck.  Seems that would put the SW Chief out of commission for a while?

Yeah I thought they had a plan to save it?

as you can see in the 2nd link, it is mostly saved (the clock tower and triangular facade). they are currently demo'ing the rear part of the building

Man, is Osco still around? I remember going into those stores as a kid and thinking, "wtf is this place?"

Osco was the 20th century equivalent to Dollar General

But it also had weird, low-rent department store vibes, if I recall correctly.
