Lady friend just moved to KC about a 9 months ago and her brother and his gf were in town for the first time last weekend. This conversation ensued.

Brother - "So according to my sister Kansas City has two mayor's, is that true?"

Ben ji - "Wut"

Lady friend - "Yeah, doesn't KC have 2 mayors"

Ben ji - "Kansas City Missouri has a mayor and Kansas City Kansas has a mayor but they are not the same city"

Lady friend - "They aren't the same city?"

Ben ji - "No, they are two different cities in 2 different states but right next to each other"

Lady friend - "I live in the Missouri one right?"

Ben ji - "Yes"

Brothers GF - "So Kansas City is not actually in Kansas but there is also a Kansas city in Kansas right next to the Kansas City in Missouri? This is so confusing"

They are from the Upper Midwest as well, not some out of touch coasters.

You should have analogized it to West Berlin vs. East Berlin.

Completely destroying the streetcar system has to be one of the worst things a modern city has done infrastructure wise. Wtf were they thinking

the 1950's-1990's will eventually be looked back on as a weird blip in the overall human history of dense urban areas.

Cars, man. I still think the only way to keep the plaza from completely going under is closing the streets to traffic. Would make it a destination again.

streetcars were considered obsolete, understandably.

Quote
The transit company relied heavily on streetcars in its early years but began phasing them out after World War II. As detailed in A Splendid Ride: The Streetcars of Kansas City, 1870-1957 by former Kansas City Star reporter Monroe Dodd, Public Service Company officials had deemed the streetcars obsolete and too expensive to maintain by the 1950s. Buses were cheaper to operate and, because they didn’t need miles of dedicated track and overhead powerlines to run, could easily alter routes and adapt to changing passenger needs.

That is actually a pretty good idea. Traffic in it is awful and it's just not a good mix of people and cars at all.
