i think it's disingenuous to look at a streetcar and say "well crap now how am i supposed to uber anywhere?"
My point is that hardly anyone is going to be taking the streetcar to westport if it lets out at 39th and main.

well as Phil noted, shitloads of people take the streetcar to the crossroads and it's an even farther walk
phil noted that an already booming area continued to boom (but maybe a little faster) after $100 million was invested into it.  no crap?

yeah but that's irrelevant to your point of the distance being too far for people to want to walk, despite evidence that it's not too far.

I don't get what your point about the crossroads is.  there's tons of crossroads crap right on main street.  like, the streetcar literally goes through the crossroads:

Around 2025 I can see Westport Rd between main and Broadway growing up bigly and a friendly walk to the anchor of Westport square on the end. Can't wait.

the stagecoach has got to be jazzed to the tits at the prospect
My public transit pub crawl stopped their last year. Girls even walked it.

The point is people will walk the distance from mass transit to bars/restaurants in this city. The exact thing Westport mouthpieces say won't happen....and they are a much bigger draw than the east Crossroads from an entertainment district perspective.

it's a five minute walk from the streetcar to doubleshift.  it's a ten minute walk to kelly's from 39th and main.  these aren't apples and apples.

anyway, we're not changing eachother's minds about this, but I get why westport guy is angry (notwithstanding his "FOUR BLOCKS?!" quote).

Google maps says they are both .4 mile walks. As one that's walked both the Westport walk is way more pleasant

Even ubers are kind of bullshit when you think about it.  You have to walk all the way from wherever you were sitting on your ass out to a street where the car is.  The driver should come right to your body and carry you piggyback to the car and do the same to deliver you to a barstool.

Anything from 0 to 10 minutes is nothing, particularly in the context of bar-hopping.

well a ten minute walk to a streetcar and riding on the streetcar and walking ten minutes to wherever you want to go probably adds 20-25 minutes or so over an uber trip.

I see the distinction you're making now.

People who are already using public transit won't have any issue w/the transit stop being a 10-minute walk from the destination.  People not used to it, and who probably drove/uber'd to the first destination anyway, will think that's dumb.

Traffic matters too.  In dense cities, uber'n through traffic wouldn't be quicker than transit'n and walking.  Probably not an issue there.  That's something I always hated about KC - how far away things were from each other, and that they weren't good enough things to be worth the effort.

Isn't the streetcar supposed to be a baby step to having real metro-wide transit?  If/when you get to a point of being able to train from Overland Park to Westport, possibly having to walk that last 10 minutes will be unnoticeable.

Yes. It's part of a metro wide plan. This is the spine for others to connect to (commuter rail up 35 from joco, commuter rail on the Rock island trail from East and Southwest, BRT through wyco, BRT to Northland or rail if NKC decides to spend some casino cash).

This spine is the second busiest transit corridor in the metro. Troost is higher but there was no appetite from East side leaders or funding method to start there.

yeah i agree that if you're coming in from overland park or somewhere way south, the 10 minute walk is relatively less important.

then again it's important to remember that this thing isn't a train.  it's basically a very long bus without a dedicated lane.  a trip in from the far less densely populated suburbs would likely require a multiple mile drive/walk to the stop in the first place, only to essentially be taking a bus ride north (except the bus ride is free and doesn't scare whites).

it does rather grind my gears that the same people who complain that "it's just a 1.5 mile toy train" are the exact same people who were (and are) against an expanded route to UMKC. like yeah obviously i would like full blown trains on dedicated tracks like denver or seattle or any number of other real cities, but this is all we could pass because so many dan coffeys are out here being against new things just to be against them. it's extremely irritating.

The hypothetical ride in from the suburbs would be a real light rail train though, right?  It would only be when it gets to the dense part that the suburb'r might need to transfer on a bus/streetcar/feet.  And the whites can handle that last little part.

It is transit to the appropriate scale of Kansas City factoring in our lack of traffic and overabundance of car lanes.  Dedicated ROW in this area would be a waste of money.
