i wonder if we could approve some sort of tax that is funded from the imaginary bucket of free and unlimited money and just use those dollars to put these cops back on the beat.

another idea would be to tax sales on purchases made in other municipalities.  levy a half-cent per gallon gasoline tax in houston?

Kcpd could help here too... Their pension is killing the city budget.

hopefully the war zone around the new downtown hotel doesn't dissuade visitors from coming to our city

it is a lot, like the article said- it's 8% of the department

for a city that's one of the most violent cities in the country, we're moving in the wrong direction as it relates to policing our city

but streetcar, downtown hotel, and billion dollar terminal

KCMO PD has 1500 officers and 500 of them work some form of a desk job.

Subtract every one of those things from KCMO landscape... They never happened... we are in the exact same position.

KCPD ranks 16 of top 50 in the country when it comes to enlisted officers per capita (29 per 10,000 residents).  Other cities if note...

DC... 61 (top city)
Baltimore...47
Chicago... 44
St. Louis... 42
Boston....33
Dallas...28
LA....26
Denver....22
Portland... 16

2013 stats from bjs.gov....more cops doesn't appear to be the single fix to reduce crime.

So I guess there's a second announcement forthcoming that will address how we will reduce crime?

KC nova has been very successful since it's inception.

One of NOVA's three basic elements is:

"For those who continue to commit violence, a certain and swift response from law enforcement on those individuals and their associates."

This reduction would appear to limit the ability to make a certain and swift response.  No?

Well, homicides are trending up while the rate of solving them are going down.  :(

2015 was Kansas City’s deadliest year for homicides since 2011

Quote
Homicide investigators cleared, or solved, 67 of last year’s (2015) killings. That gave them a 61 percent clearance rate. That compared to a 67 percent clearance rate for 2014./
