not really at all, i think i do a pretty good job at explaining why i dislike him. as a taxpayer in the highest taxed area of the entire state, i don't like being ignored by my elected officials.  especially egotistical power hungry people like sly james.

what's weird is mocat and phil's blind love for him, like they really don't care how he does what he does.  that's weird.

 the only thing the city had to do with that kauffman center is to build a parking lot next to it (still owned by the city)
all the money was raised by a 501c established by julia kauffman.  even the land was purchased by the kauffman foundation, not donated by the city.  sly had nothing to do with it.

it can be.  currently working diligently with my council members to get the panhandlers off of it.  oh and also we're getting rid of the stop light at 48th and main and putting in a four-way stop.  it's nice having elected officials that partner with their constituency.

oh, the hotel that you and i are paying for and that hyatt is going to profit from through exclusivity on banquet bookings? ya looks great.  i'm really not firmly against the hotel, don't care either way- again, not sure why you're so pro-hotel, never really heard a reason other than because you blindly support everything that relates to spending city money.  my problem isn't with the hotel, it's with how sly went about pushing it through without voter input.

fwiw, conventions are already looking elsewhere because they're not allowed to bid out their banquet needs to help drive their down costs.  oh well!  new hotel!

Clams, do you think the city will make more or less money from the hotel than they currently do from the piece of land that is there now?

i think that the city gave away a prime piece of real estate that they didn't need to give away and that others would have paid to develop
it's funny because you think of yourself as a progressive but have the mentality of someone who feels like they need to give away the farm just to get noticed by the big kids

and again, i'm not so against the hotel as much as i am how it came to be.  i mean, city charter?  eff IT.

had to be a crap load with all of the development that's going on downtown w/ the streetcar and the P&L and the airport and the kauffman center garage.

come on, that's prime real estate, they didn't need to give it away and then pay for the hotel to be built too.  the dollars generated by that hotel will not stay in this city.

Here's the bottom line for me. Yes in a perfect world we would not need to offer incentives for developers, and we are probably pretty close to that point. But the reason they are called incentives is because the city benefits in the long run.
The helzberg arch firm debacle is one of the ugly results of the city being super generous, even reckless with their tif giveaways. So now everyone expects them. I agree with you there. But here we are, and hopefully in the near future we won't need them so much.

BNIM and yes, that type of crap is what makes me mad.  the last time a tif board member went against a project that sly wanted, he removed them from the tif council.

read this article, it does a great job explaining sly james' idea of governing-
