I can't decide if KCMO is being unrealistic or Uber is just being b-holes.  Probably little of both huh?

Let Lyft take over if Uber wants to run away....just something other than Bill George's cab monopoly.

They gone!

Politicians (*Kansas city) is so dumb

i'm not convinced that they're actually going to leave.  $40k is not a lot of money to a company worth almost $50B.

They aren't gone and they aren't going anywhere is my prediction.

I'm actually on the side of kcmo now after reading through this stuff. The regulations are pretty well aligned with other cities uber operates in.

Kansas City is Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) for doing this.

Quote
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -
Uber officials say the company will stop operating in Kansas City after the city council approved new regulations for such ride-sharing operations.Among other things, the regulations approved Thursday require adequate insurance and background check information from taxis and ride-booking services. It charges individual drivers $250 but that would drop to $100 if a parent company paid an annual fee of $40,000.

The city said the regulations were meant to protect public safety.

Uber said in an email to The Kansas City Star that the city was trying to squeeze ridesharing into antiquated regulations and will eliminate a safe and reliable transportation option.

Mayor Sly James accused Uber of refusing to negotiate because it did not want to be regulated at all.

Yes. Like every city. They pulled out of San Antonio most recently.

Both sides share the blame IMO. KCMO is probably too influenced by the local cab monopoly...that seems to be a common issue in all cities....but the regs they came up with are reasonable and in line with other cities. uber thinks they can demand from cities what they want passed. I have no problems with the city pushing back...they aren't asking for extreme fees or unreasonable checks if you ask me....and I hate the cabs in this city and would love to see Bill George fall.

you pretty much have to regulate it like a chauffer or taxi hack though.   Otherwise the existing taxis would go rogue and become "rideshare".

Taxi drivers already do convert in cities it is operating in.  But then they continue there same shady taxi practice and being grumpy assholes and people downvote the hell out of them and they never get rides (or they change).

Yeah. If there was a taxi service that was even remotely reliable when making a reservation, credit card payment standards, or even having a usable app this would not be an issue.  But mostly, cab drivers are shady, and cab companies inflexible to technology.  After further review i dont mind the uber rules, and they aren't a legitimate barrier to entry for drivers an Uber itself.  I will be pissed if they want use kc as an example, since it's a midsized city.

The idea of regulation is dumb.  Charge them tax and call it a day.  Is this all about the cost of a biz license or is it more than that?

I imagine having an insured driver could have its benefits.  And having one with a background check might be a good idea.
