I lived in Hyde park where there were regular car break-ins and I kind of expected it to happen at some point and when it finally did I was so pissed and felt like a helpless victim.

Cars are really becoming not worth the hassle. Can we move BSFS closer on a bus route so I can dump mine? Ts and Ps Blast.

Had someone break into my car in Manhattan and take my checkbook. Never carried one again. This is your chance!

are there really no occasions you come across where a check is necessary? like paying old people (parents) that dont' have paypal relatively large sums of money or anything like that?

Online bill pay sends them a check or bring one check for them. Never ran into situation that I had to immediately pay someone I wasn't aware of.

Not judging, just my experience. I assume you called the bank and told them the check numbers taken?

Sometimes you really need checks.   But you should never leave them in a car.

I've never had a landlord that didn't require rent payments to be in check form.
