they really are.  places like eastern colorado should be bunched together with western ks and the ok/tx panhandle.

In regards to positions of power within the state (figurative usage) splitting things up is not a bad idea, i.e states (literal usage)

That seems entirely reasonable. Although I'm a bit surprised Boise and Reno's counties weren't part of it.
