I had no idea the way I pronounced "pecan" was so rare.

Good find
The only thing I was differet from most Kansans was my pronunciation of syrup. Yeah, it's sear-up.
-
yeah, definitely fun. the only people I know in Illinois that say crawdad are the really redneck hillbilly ones, but as the map demonstrates they're there.

I attribute my own "pick-AHN" pronouning to going to the Walnut Valley Bluegrass festival (Winfield, for those in the know) every year since i was young and everyone calls one section of the campgrounds the "Pecan Grove" there being a bunch of Okies at this particular festival, it must have rubbed off.
-
#20 is weird
I've never heard anyone say "The City" and mean NYC. Down here, people are talking about OKC when they say "The City"

No mention of dollar dances? The world may never know.

I say sear-up :frown:

Only Godless heathens call soda, "pop".
-
Only Godless heathens call soda, "pop".
Living in the deep south it would infuriate me how soda was referred to as "coke." What kind of coke do you want, we have pepsi, dr pepper..... >:(
-
team pick-AHN here. Pretty amazing how the map hits pretty much where I grew up and the area where my grandparents lived in Oklahoma where they made us pick up pecans when we visited.
-
Only Godless heathens call soda, "pop".
St. Louis is over the top about calling it soda. Places will act like they have no idea what you want when you order "pop." They know, they are just jerks.
That map is like bright red over St. Louis...little "soda" capital of the Midwest.
I say soda for the most part, but I ALWAYS say "pop" in St. Louis. eff those assholes, man.

People who say soda and live in the midwest are trying to hard to not be white midwesterny. Just embrace it sometimes. I mean, you're drinking a pop, call it whatev you want it still ain't classy.

Know what I had for breakfast mocat? A big plate of pick-AHNs smothered with sear-up and washed down with a tall glass off pop (Pepsi Next if you must know). Sounds kind of unhealthy but it's delicious.

keep in mind yelpsters in SF are pretty awful people most of the time.
-
When I was last in sf, I was just wondering around and went right into the bright red "sketchy" area. Stopped in a mexican restaurant for lunch, but it all looked disgusting so I left.

The Tenderloin? Ha ha, that place is rough ridin' crazy and like right adjacent to Union Square. I was walking through there a month or two ago and saw a crackhead just messing around with a gun on a corner. I couldn't tell if it was real or not, but I kept walking.
-
I was standing at a corner waiting for the light to change and hear a guy telling another guy "I jacked a nigga for some rocks here last night, fuckin busted ass junkies". My senses were heightened after that.

Like Janelle, but it's an interesting analysis of "most critically acclaimed" that places her above, say, Melissa Etheridge. :dunno:
-
Will take Janelle Monae, could of done alot worse.
-
Missouri's is ok but they have, oh, I don't know, CHARLIE PARKER (kc) AND MILES DAVIS (stl)! Ike and Tina are pud by comparison. Also Chuck Berry is from STL (sorry pete about the STL)
-
Like Janelle, but it's an interesting analysis of "most critically acclaimed" that places her above, say, Melissa Etheridge. :dunno:
I think 95% of critics would rate Janelle above Etheridge. The actual band Kansas, I'm not as sure.
-
Is Janelle a lesbian? I'm 100% sure the artist from Kansas should be G/L.
-
i mean, i'm not a country guy, but i can think of dozens of extremely successful and popular country artists from oklahoma that should be above the flaming lips.
-
garth
reba
vince gill
toby keith
the guy from the voice
the guy from the voice's wife
all more successful than the flaming lips. hell, hinder and all-american rejects are probably more successful than the lips. :dunno:
-
"Critically acclaimed" not "sold the most records". Flaming Lips are much more critically acclaimed than anything you listened. Country music is only acclaimed by fans of country music.

they don't suck, but you could probably put Garth there. It's easy to make an argument for either one.

i would put garth up against just about anybody
-
The traffic circle/roundabout thing doesn't make much sense because they aren't the same thing. Really, I think the people who answered "traffic circle" probably just have shittier roads than the people who said "roundabout".

Adorable k_m story alert!!
My 30 year old parents had put us kids to bed and were out on the deck conversing with their friends. All of a sudden they heard me screaming, "KILLER! HELP, IT'S A KILLER!!" They ran inside and upstairs, and apparently there was a moth on the ceiling that I was deathly afraid of, and also thought it was called a killer instead of a miller. :D

I haven't read the thread for a while, but if you like maps and linguistics, you should definitely spend 3-4 hours here:

It's hard to read, but once you get the hang of it, you'll never want to leave. It's just a dude who loves maps and linguistics who watches a ton of youtube vids and does a bunch of research.

If I recall correctly there was quite the discussion over what it meant for that one Dakota to be worst as rape. Like, do they do it a lot? Or hardly ever? Or like when they rape is it just the awfulest rape? I don't believe we ever reached a conclusion.

They are the hill jacks, poor as crap and dumber than dirt but they love america.
Also because their ancestors couldn't read or write, literacy still only runs around 38% in those counties.

Dad, where is our family from?
America.

the south didn't require cheap labor from masses of european immigrants, so the white folks who are there have been hanging around for a long time. most of those white people were/are very poor and poor people don't care to do genealogy stuff.

Reading that 11 nations book now. The original hill jacks were in WV and when more people arrived they would just float down the Ohio River to settle new lands since this was the easiest way to travel(no roads).
Why didn't they head north into the better farmlands of central OH/IN/IL? Welp, they were inbred hicks who hated being told what to do and thus avoided area's with large populations or where more people were likely to settle. Specifically the Yankee's from New England who were all about education and loved to start schools/colleges to assimilate everyone into there way of life.
One of the first things the Yankee's did when they settled KS was start the colleges that today we call KSU and KU.

I get that Africa is big and all, but it is a continent and not just a country...apples and oranges, ya know.
-
if africa combined and became a single country, id be like, kind of worried in maybe, like, 200 years, that they would organize and take over the world.
-
did not realize people were disparaging Africa's size.

yeah, weird thing to do a map about. do people know that North America is bigger than the USA, Canada and Mexico combined?
-
antarctica is bigger than europe or australia (not combined). kind of interesting maybe? moreso than the africa thing anyway?
-
i would like to see a map that puts all the states inside the boundaries of the USA and see how many states fit
-
US on top of Europe would probably be more interesting.

also australia. australia is really pud sized. more than you think. smaller than europe. unless you thought it was smaller than europe. then, yep, you got it. but it's also just ONE COUNTRY! (I think)

Since I discovered that New Mexico is where I belong I read on Wikipedia that its name does not reference the country of Mexico and that it was called "New Mexico" long before Mexico was called "Mexico." I guess I believe that. At the same time, I sort of think of New Mexico as the new Colorado and sort of think of Colorado as the new California.

All Streets consists of 240 million individual road segments. No other features — no outlines, cities, or types of terrain — are marked, yet canyons and mountains emerge as the roads course around them, and sparser webs of road mark less populated areas. More details can be found here, with additional discussion of the previous version here.

I'd like to see an xy plot of that map, where the x axis is the river, and the y is the height of the tallest peak in that drainage.

did the mississippi used to be called the Missouri? Also the St. Lawrence River is pretty cool.
when two rivers meet, the longer river's name gets used from then on. the missouri's source is farther away than the mississippi's, so technically it should be the missouri, but the mississippi was "discovered" and named first, before it was known how far away the source of the missouri river is.

This is the most depressing map I've ever seen.
S. D. Houston of Riley county (on the western fringe of the then settled part of Kansas) who was the champion of "Big Kansas" in regard to the western boundary. Houston said, "If we can get the boundary designated by congress in the Kansas-Nebraska bill, and get a road to the mountains, I ask if it is not a question of some magnitude whether Kansas shall not have the grand Pacific Railroad of the country. . . . Suppose you go on and adopt the 25th meridian, you leave Kansas some three hundred miles from the mountains." He continued, "I'd rather have it go to those regions of gold."
The Lawrence Republican stated that the exclusion of both southern Nebraska and far western Kansas was wise. "It is entirely evident that the gold region could not be included in our government. A State 700 miles long is out of the question.

Fun fact...If you look at the west bottoms(Kansas City) you will notice that half of it is in KS and half is in Missouri. This is because when MO was admitted as a state in 1820 they used the mouth of the Kaw as the dividing line. By the time they finally started building stuff in KC the mouth of the Kaw had shifted a quarter mile northwest. :D

My dad spent his 7th grade year living in Tampa, Fla. and one time told me about sunshowers when I was a kid and it was raining while sunny. We were in Kansas, but he said they used to have them all the time in Florida. I always thought that is what everyone called it, "sunshowers." I was way wrong.
Apparently only Floridians call them that.

What about this question:
What do you call a traffic jam caused by drivers slowing down to look at an accident or other diversion on the side of the road?
I answered "I have no word for this," and was basically blue all over the map. Is there a common word for this in KS?

i think i answered that "rubbernecking" is something people do when they look at a wreck but i didn't know a word for the jam itself.

I had Reno, San Jose, and Denver the first time I took it, too. Of those places I've only ever been to Denver. Then I took it a second time and got slightly different questions and got pegged with ICT, KC, Lincoln.
The state of KS was still in red in both, just none of the cities picked were here. I guess if we ever visit the trashiest cities west of the Missouri, we'll fit right in.

All Streets consists of 240 million individual road segments. No other features — no outlines, cities, or types of terrain — are marked, yet canyons and mountains emerge as the roads course around them, and sparser webs of road mark less populated areas. More details can be found here, with additional discussion of the previous version here.

Today is proof that this map is complete crap. Absolutely gorgeous day in MHK, but it doesn't qualify because it was a few degrees below 45 very early this morning.

The South did a real nice job overall. Kevin Gates, Juicy J, Civil Wars, Rick Ross.
Also, does Wiz Khalifa have some sort of connection to Arkansas?
Also, California's seems kind of weird.

Note the source. BI is rough ridin' awful and Yahoo! loves it like it loves Live Science
-
please note (in case you didn't read the explanation of the map):
To be clear, these aren't necessarily the most-listened to bands in each state, but rather the bands that have unusually high support in each state.
-

http://static.echonest.com/geo_listening_preferences/?r1=united_states&r1=CA&depth=200
mess with the "Depth". If you select "40", it only looks at California's 40 favorite artists, and of those, Bonobo is #28, but only #85 in the rest of the USA.

I think the color scale is darker in the more extreme cases and lighter when there is only a slightly higher frequency of listens in that state

Fun Eric Church fact-
One of my buddies works for his management team in Nashville, they also manage the Black Keys and some other bands.
MY Gf is big black keys fan so I had him send me a CD signed by them saying "happy birthday" for her bday last year.
:D

http://www.buzzfeed.com/awesomer/what-state-do-you-actually-belong-in (http://www.buzzfeed.com/awesomer/what-state-do-you-actually-belong-in)
You got: Oregon
You’re the most creative person in any group. Others look to you for advice on how to better spice up things, and they should: you’re basically the human version of hot sauce. You spice up the blandest occasions. You’re always on the cutting edge of the newest thing. You ever hear of Tire Gum? Andrew’s Sister? Plaid Dads? Of course you have.
I'm not like that at all. I'm the least new thing person I know. I have severe new thing apathy. It's one of my worst traits according to other people.
-
You got: Pennsylvania
You’re the most extroverted out of any of your friends - you’re often thought of as the “leader,” someone who makes the plans. People admire you for your “go-getting” attitude, even if you can be a bit temperamental at times. Whatever, it comes with the territory.
Pennsylvania the Kansas of the east.
-
Apparently everyone is the most awesome person in their respective peer group and the state they are supposed to live is really irrelevant.

<10% :sdeek:
-
ahhhh
Here are some gotchas:
Trip Routes are a result of passing the start and end locations to the Google Directions API. They are a possible route that the taxi took, but should not be assumed to be accurate.
Empty Taxis also follow the "best route" between a dropoff and the next pickup. Just as with the trips, this is just an effective way to move the marker around, but doesn't reflect the reality of where the taxi traveled.
Tips are only reported in the data for credit card transactions. Cash tips are not included.

They don't double dip in the same bank accounts, if that is what you're asking.
Its likely listed as the same simply because their year to year income would be the same, having equal ownership of the company, thus not reflecting actual cash on hand.

The locations of the dots do not represent actual addresses. The most detailed geographic identifier in Census Bureau data is the census block. Individual dots are randomly located within a particular census block to match aggregate population totals for that block. As a result, dots in some census blocks may be located in the middle of parks, cemeteries, lakes, or other clearly non-residential areas within that census block. No greater geographic resolution for the 2010 Census data is publicly available (and for good reason).

I've been thinking that it's pretty racist how many different races we lump into the "Asian" race.

I kinda get offended when, in a survey or whatever, I'm asked to select a race for myself. I admit I'm weird about that stuff, though.

I don't know which is worse:
The fact that they derped their geography class, or the fact that Nebraska's favorite food is Hot Pockets.

100% Prairie Living
Most of us are married, family farmers who work hard on our land, located primarily in the Midwest. We shop only when we need something, and stick to the food brands we know. Other than farm equipment, we own and drive trucks, SUVs, and ATVs. Technology isn't of particular interest. Financial activities include banking in person, investing in low-interest CDs, and holding term/whole life insurance policies. Faith and religion are strong influences in our lives; we donate to religious groups and join religious clubs. Radios are tuned to inspirational, faith, and country music stations. We also own pets, watch TV via satellite, shop at Walmart, and eat out at Subway. When there's time, we hunt, fish, go to country music concerts, and camp out

In fact, you could argue that it's so great that it even pulls Pott Co. up into the top 10% just for being an adjacent county.

The internet is an amazing thing. I just stumbled across this today and spent an hour playing with it.
http://maps.kgs.ku.edu/oilgas/index.cfm
Shows every oil/gas/water well in KS. I can look at my grand parents old farm and see they have 3 water wells, 2 completed in 1976 under my GPA's name and 1 in 2007 under my uncles name(GPA passed away in 2004).
I can also see that the plot of land my dad is inheriting (GMA passed away in march ) is next to some land where there is an oil well that was completed in 2012. You can click the well and see who owns it(Long lost cousins apparently), how much it has produced every month etc etc. You can even see the core samples from the drilling in PDF's, just crazy stuff.

so i didnt click the link, but is that how drunk the average person got every night over the summer? also there is no way, with the laws being more lax, that mizzou was less drunk
-
@TBT, im not sure. Even the link is kinda vague on that. It just says the average of all three summer months.
Its the internet, it could be a completely bogus map with no factual statistics for all I know. Haha.
-
im assuming its per day, thats the only thing that makes sense. WVU is also the capital of moonshine in the US, according to that moonshiners show on the discovery channel, which by the way is pretty rough ridin' entertaining.
the hardest thing for me to digest is how the eff we are beating mizzou, like, they are the meth capital of the world, and you know they drink while they do their meth
-
I disagree with the findings of that map

... and you know they drink while they do their meth
I mean, yeah, of course. Goes without saying!

I'm a big fan of that map just because it shows all of the ridiculous school districts we have with less than 1,000 students total.
I expected western ks to be the biggest offender but its really the southeast/southcentral part of the state that is the worst when you take into account the geographic area.
-
Leroy, Burlington and Lebo all have less than 1,000 students and could easily be consolidated into one district.
Better yet have Garnett annex them and become a 4a powerhouse.

How old is this data? I don't think there are 13,000 people living in Coffeyville.

The water well data that is shown on the KGS map is pulled from the Water Well Completion form database (WWC5). Well drillers and other people associated with punching holes to groundwater have to submit a WWC5 for each completed well. Kansas started the WWC5 database and groundwater protection act in 1974. So if you have groundwater wells on your property that were installed prior to 1974 and haven't been redrilled after 1974, they won't be on that map.
If your water wells have water rights associated with them, or if you aren't even sure they ever have, you can peruse the Kansas Division of Water Resources WIMAS system and see the available info and some interesting things.
Oil and gas wells equal money and their locations have been recorded since the late 1920s.

well Santa Rosa has 170k and Petaluma and Novato are both 50-60k. I've never been up past Novato but a big issue is the 101 is the only way to get to the city (or to a Ferry in Marin) and it rough ridin' sucks.
And yeah, it's pretty mountainous/wildernessy or wine country starts up there and probably won't ever have significant new development outside of the three northern cities I mentioned.

it's like one of the greatest treasure troves in this city. make sure and go to the auxiliary building or whatever it's called above ground, with the giant mural that spreads all around it on the inside, and ask somebody who works there the story behind it. it's so ridiculous it sounds made up.

with all the talk about the DFW metro within K-State admissions, i am going to be checking in after a day or two and see how that ends up looking vs how Kansas City ends up, and see if any other area pops or not.

My GF got me an old replica globe for Christmas  . She knows the exact date but wont tell me so its a game....I've narrowed it down to between 1971 (Pakistan/Bangladesh 2 separate countries) and 1989 (East/West Germany).
Will do some more research tonight on Dates countries were founded/split off etc to see if I can find a more exact range. SO MUCH FUN. Go Maps!

Finally got around to looking at it and it's actually super simple. I just assumed Germany was still split but it's been reunited and the USSR is still there, so 1990/91ish.

I notice it has Bonn as the capitol. Berlin wasn't "officially" ratified as the capitol until 1991. So probably 1990 for the globe. Other parts of the world would be telling.

I think I've heard thunder twice in eight years living in the Bay Area. There probably wasn't one in 2018. I'm guessing it's because there's never enough warm air for a thunderstorm
-
we don't get any here either and it's not for lack of warm air.
it doesn't rain in the summer here = no lightning. you don't get lightning with winter precip.
surprised az/nm aren't a little more colored up. pretty cool thunderstorms with the monsoons.

halfEmpty, tell me more about being a cartographer. Like what kind of maps do you make? Geological?
How have google maps/satellites impacted your career?

Spending half my life with Google Maps it had never occurred to me how important accurate maps were for the military back in the days before satellites. Like I know we raided all the Nazi's scientists/technology but it I had no idea we also jacked all their maps as well.

Honestly, I don't make many maps any more.(or what I would call a publish quality map) I used to make geology maps when I was finishing up college and worked at the Kansas Geological Survey. I do love maps though and have always been a geography nerd even as a child. I miss the intricacies of making a really fine map.
I use google maps for driving directions. Not really used all that much for professional mapping or analysis (unless pulling data from google for analysis).
I'm a solutions architect now and mostly plan projects, integrations, and spatial analysis. I spend way more time writing code than I do making maps.
Geography has really started blowing up in the last decade or so. For instance, company B wants to build a new store. They'd ask a GIS(Geography Information Systems) person to analyze patterns and tell them the best locations to put that new store (this could be based on traffic patterns, demographics, nearby retail, local income, etc..
For me, working in the public sector now, we have issues with project funding and where to spend money. So I'll build a model of all our assets, what condition they are in, how much longer they will last, etc.. with the spatial component, I can map out locations around the city where we have multiple asset categories nearing their end-of-life and/or have high consequence of failure. We can focus project money on those locations, get a better ROI and avoid the always embarrassing, replace a road and 2 years later dig it up to replace the water line underneath scenario. You'd think that would be a given to do them both at the same time, but that has always been a massive problem in government silos.
VR, 3D and AI/Machine Learning are really the next frontiers of Geography. Some really cool applications coming out.
I kind of veered there and didn't really talk about maps all that much.

I haven't been on any WIHA land to hunt but I used to fish alot of farm ponds in the equivalent FISH program and rarely saw anyone else, maybe 1/4 of the time. Almost all the WIHA/FISH lands are at least 1 HR away from the major metro areas in Kansas, if they were closer I'm sure they would get pounded. Living in KC the closest FISH lands were south of Baldwin City or North of Tonganoxie.
For the WIHA near major metro area's you have to register online beforehand and check in electronically.

Here is a collection of 992 old timey kansas maps, mainly old directories of land plots.

I was going through my attic and found this pretty neat map

What demon does it summon?

Interestingly enough a lot of those same houses exist today

wait where did that river go
-
That's fascinating. No downtown? Were there businesses on some of those lots? Did people get food from Market Square?

My guess is it was re-routed a little east when the dam was built. Maybe that happened before though.

It also could of naturally shifted to the east sometime after 1909.

I think this just shows the lots and doesn't differentiate from Residential/business etc.
-
yeah I knew rivers moved way back when but wasn't sure if tuttle creek was the reason.
side note, that map also explains the weirdness of part of MHK being in Pott county that never made sense to me.
-
also love how neat and orderly the city is and the farm/college is like "eff it, stick a building here"

Moved east in the flood of 1903!
-
That also says the Kansas River moved south a little at the same time creating hunters Island. I dug a basement down there once and it was like 7 feet straight down of sand!
-
:surprised:
Thus the western boundary [of Riley County] actually was to the crest of the Rocky Mountains until Davis (Geary) County and Clay County were formed in the mid-1800s.

he didn't cite him but Matt Shirley created that and is the brother of Paul Shirley who's from Kansas and played at ISU and in the NBA for a bit. I'm pretty sure Matt played somewhere in college and his IG is a fun follow.

Saw this book at the dusty bookshelf, really wanted it but the book was 50 bucks. But was very detailed and showed wars, sieges and abunch of other things related to land history.

whoppers are ick city. I think I'd rather have those weird orange or black wrapped candies that were always the last things to go in your stash of halloween candy than whoppers

hold onto your ass because here is the scoop: small hill with a cross on it. it's near ashland kansas which is best known for getting the living crap kicked out of them by Meade in sports. also there is a tiny town (couple houses?) near there called Sitka that is like a ghost town now that used to have a restaurant when I was a kid that people would drive all the way from meade to go to I think because it was in a tiny town and it was in an old school or something. think it closed down when I was in HS or something.
-
Is the cross enormous? Can you see it from Meade?
-
No, like kinda pud

I did not realize there were two bluff creeks, like three counties apart! :surprised:
I swam/fished in the easternmost one, it almost always had water in it and during crazy times it would actually flood over bridges.
there was also a weird biker restaurant in Sun City I think (might still be)

I once posted this in the Book thread, but I love this dude's book's explanation/map of the cultural "nations" of America. It's a great book (or book on audio) if you have the time. He breaks down how they came to be, and what their characteristics are, with evidence. The end of the book is not so good where he speculates about the future, but the majority of the book is fantastic.
I also love that he basically implies that we (the "Midlands") are the most sane of all of them. :gocho:

There's some interesting history in the book but the author really tries too hard to fit everything in modern politics into his concept IMO

I've read this multiple times and agree that it is very good.
I do think greater appalachia creeps up too far past the Ohio river in IL/IN but I don't have a local POV.

Also southern MN is Midlands and not Yankeedom... Minneapolis? Yankeedom.
Mankato? Midlands

Going off memory here
- Tidewater was Settled/dominated by British sons who didnt get any of daddys land as opposed to the deep south plantations which were settled/dominated by plantation owners from the Caribbean. A more genteel version of the deep south.

i really like the map, but i associate appalachia with forests dense enough to hide stuff like incest and moonshining, and that just can't happen in west texas / oklahoma / kansas or freaking new mexico lmao. did he just include a slice of new mexico in appalachia to F with people? i am upset now.
"new mexico = appalachia"

for example I already knew California had way more Trump voters than even lived in Kansas, but didn't know more people voted for Trump in California than voted for Trump in Texas.
