Putting Urbana-Champaign in greater appalachia is pretty dumb.

There's some interesting history in the book but the author really tries too hard to fit everything in modern politics into his concept IMO

I once posted this in the Book thread, but I love this dude's book's explanation/map of the cultural "nations" of America.  It's a great book (or book on audio) if you have the time.  He breaks down how they came to be, and what their characteristics are, with evidence.  The end of the book is not so good where he speculates about the future, but the majority of the book is fantastic.

I also love that he basically implies that we (the "Midlands") are the most sane of all of them.  :gocho:

Sound like my next audible listen. Thanks Pete!
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

I've read this multiple times and agree that it is very good.

I do think greater appalachia creeps up too far past the Ohio river in IL/IN but I don't have a local POV.

Also southern MN is Midlands and not Yankeedom... Minneapolis? Yankeedom.

Mankato? Midlands

Just my opinion

I'll have to read it. Interesting there's a border between Garden City and Dodge City.

What are the cliff notes on why there is a Tidewater (figured they'd group it in with the deep south tbh, which I don't really think it is but I've never lived in the deep south).

Going off memory here

- Tidewater was Settled/dominated by British sons who didnt get any of daddys land as opposed to the deep south plantations which were settled/dominated by plantation owners from the Caribbean. A more genteel version of the deep south.

i really like the map, but i associate appalachia with forests dense enough to hide stuff like incest and moonshining, and that just can't happen in west texas / oklahoma / kansas or freaking new mexico lmao. did he just include a slice of new mexico in appalachia to F with people? i am upset now.

"new mexico = appalachia"

interesting map and thread!

https://twitter.com/xkcd/status/1339341149488746498

for example I already knew California had way more Trump voters than even lived in Kansas, but didn't know more people voted for Trump in California than voted for Trump in Texas.

There are a lot more people in California.  More people voted for Biden in Texas than in New York.

1900: William McKinley vs. William Jennings Bryan

Crazy that in 1900 Kansas had more electoral votes than California.

Was messing around on my Google maps timeline today and it gives me a pretty detailed heat map of where I have been the past 3 years.

I checked out that dot off the coast of OR and it was playing a round of golf here in KC. No idea why the dot showed out there. Also some of the dots were just from layovers at airports (STL/OAK/DFW)

I had a dot in the exact same place! It was a music venue in Oakland. :Rusty:

Like i never thought about minnesota or arizona having one metro dominate the way Chicago dominates Illinois but there you have it
