wetwillie that is a lot! what are the main stops on your vq

Going with a buddy that does this thing a lot so he’s the planner for this one. It’s going to be about 12 days(4 spots three days each) start in Wyoming then head to Idaho, then down to Salt Lake area and finish in Colorado. I do know Challis Idaho is on the list for sure.

Would you recommend the Ouray Perimeter Trail?

Perimeter trail is good for a quick hike if you don’t feel like heading out of town or if you want some scenic. views overlooking town.  Multiple access points as well so you can easily do just a section.  It’s been several years and the kids were a lot younger then, but I think I ran the loop on my own and then took the fam to a couple spots I thought they would like.  There’s a waterfall in the NE corner of town and the trail has a bridge and tunnel over Box Canyon in the SW corner.  And the Box Canyon Falls park was pretty cool but has an entry fee.

News Release—Heat-related fatality reported in Grand Canyon National Park
On July 2 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a U.S. Park Ranger received a report of a distressed day hiker in the Tuweep area of Grand Canyon National Park.
The hiker, a 57-year-old female, was attempting an eight-mile hike in the remote Tuweep area of the park when she became unconscious. A ranger arrived on scene at approximately 1 a.m. on July 3 and pronounced the hiker deceased. On July 2, the high temperature at Tuweep was well over 100°F (38°C), with the high temperature at Phantom Ranch, near the Colorado River along the North Kaibab trail, reached approximately 114°F (46°C).
Park rangers at Grand Canyon National Park urge visitors to Grand Canyon, especially inner canyon hikers and backpackers, to be prepared for excessively hot days in the coming weeks. An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for inner canyon portions of the Grand Canyon through Wednesday, July 5.
In the summer, temperatures on exposed parts of the trail can reach over 120°F (49 °C) in the shade. Park rangers strongly advise not hiking in the inner canyon during the heat of the day between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Dolomite pics (aka Hütte stuff)

I know the Alps have huts all over, but the Dolomite Rifugios are just on a whole other level.  Take a lift up, hike awhile, stop for an espresso, hike a little more, stop for a hot lunch and a beer, take a nap in a lounge chair, hike a little more, maybe stop for another beer or wine or a strudel, hike down or back to a lift.  You can make an entire day of it just strolling from one to the next taking in the the amazing views.

It’s Italy but the region was formerly part of Austria, so German is just as if not more prevalent than Italian.

Bad behaviors to avoid on your epic vision quest:

Quote
(News Release) On Saturday, June 24, at approximately 3 p.m. Grand Teton National Park law enforcement rangers received a report that a helicopter had illegally landed at Moran Bay on the west shore of Jackson Lake, inside Grand Teton National Park. Rangers responded by boat across Jackson Lake and found the helicopter and pilot Peter Smith, of Gunnison, Colorado, and a companion picnicking along the lake.
Smith, the owner of West Elk Air in Gunnison, was charged with two violations under the Code of Federal Regulations, “Operating or using aircraft on lands or waters other than at locations designated pursuant to special regulations” and “Use of aircraft shall be in accordance with regulations of the FAA.” Each violation is a Class B misdemeanor that could include up to a $5,000 fine and/or six months in jail. Smith is scheduled to appear in court before of a federal judge in Jackson, WY in August.
Smith was previously cited for flying a fixed wing aircraft below minimum safe altitude, against Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, four months ago, in February 2023. Smith paid a $530 fine set by a federal judge.
The unauthorized landing of helicopters is prohibited on the lands and waters within the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park in order to protect wildlife and other natural resources and to preserve the visitor experience.
